What is the market likely to be for the 28k EPIC ?
At those resolutions they could be looking at a spherical lens structure. Imagine all the time that would be saved getting 'coverage'.

Hi Oneshin,
Good to hear from you.
RED's upcoming 28K Camera model called EPIC 617 is actually modeled after the 617 Still Cameras of years past. (example pictured below)
Several companies made these including Fuji and Linhof.
The 617 stands for the unusual 6x17 aspect ratio of the sensor, which is used for panoramic photography as well other shooting styles. The extreme resolution of the EPIC 617 with a sensor measuring in at 168x56mm will be able to shoot stills as well as motion up to 30fps.
Why would you need this? Imagine having this resolution for new media applications, such as digital signage (not to mention huge printed Billboards). Another use I can think of is for Translight backdrops on TV and Movie sets. (These are the huge printouts of photography that are used as a fake background.) Having a digital camera able to shoot in the resolution and aspect ratio would be incedible.
