As posted online by Jim Jannard:

"EPIC

We are not just behind schedule anymore… we are embarrassingly late. Trust me when I tell you this is a complicated and aggressive project. When one of the most respected companies in the industry is just releasing their brightest new star that does 1/5 of the resolution, half the maximum frame rate, in a box three times the size and for 3 times the price… that should tell you how tough a trick EPIC is.

Having said that, we have located the wicked, mean and nasty bug and our engineering team has put a bullet in the back of it's head. That pesky bug has put us behind in our schedule (obviously) since it also held up the work that followed it. We are now making the type of progress we had hoped to be making a few months ago.

We have working EPIC cameras… and are adding features on a daily basis. Firmware upgrades are happening fast and furious. But please remember that we are not going to release a buggy camera with limited features this time, so keep that in mind. Lots of testing, upgrading, new features, bug patrol… and all of the above happening now. The RED ONE is now one of the most reliable cameras in the industry (after a humble beginning)... EPIC will not be a step backward.

During this development/testing time we have made the decision to add 13mm of length to the brain (about 1/2" for those who are metric challenged), which means lots of new board spins to fit. This is small stuff compared to the battle we just had on monster bug patrol.

Tattoo cameras will go out as soon as we have a stable platform with a standard set of features… production to follow as soon as the Tattoo owners give us the thumbs up. We are in a hurry… but not so much as to get it wrong. I don't think it is productive to promise another date… but we all are on the same page. The sooner the better.

Scarlet is moving along side the EPIC program as the big bug hit it as well. Production of Scarlet will trail EPIC… not exactly sure by how far. A lot of it has to do with just how fast we can get EPIC production rolling and solid.

In the end… we have a great project going on here. Once again… this is not an easy task (neither was the RED ONE)... which is exactly the way we want it. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else doing anything different.

OK… next question? "

Jim and other members of the RED Team answered questions online for a couple of hours last night... Here are some of the more notable posts:

1. Where are you in the Scarlet program? Is the 2/3" still in the Frankie Jr. stage or are there working prototypes?
2. Any progress on finding a new manufacturing partner?

Jim:
1. There are working Scarlet prototypes.
2. EPIC will be manufactured in the US. Scarlet is still undecided.... at least we aren't saying.

1. What is the Bomb EVF Schedule?
2. When the EVFs are ready to ship, will they be first ordered first served ... or is there a pecking order?
3. What is the 64GB CF card schedule?

Jarred:
1. We received the first batch of real production EVF's in last week. We have 2 weeks more of testing to do, but I can tell you they are looking and working incredibly. Shipping will begin mid July.
2. We have some customers with backorders of the original EVF that take priority.. then it is first come first served.
3. 64GB CF cards we still are testing and tweaking... and there is no release date yet. We will not release them till they are perfect... we take RED recording media very seriously.

1. When will we see Scarlet footage or an R3D?
2. What is super secret feature #21 and what cameras does it apply to?
3. Will there be a price drop on the RED ONE in the near future?

Jim:
1. We have our hands full. We'll post when we can but there are much more important things to do right now. You'll see footage well before you can buy one. Smile
2. No sayin'.
3. No. New RED ONEs are very valuable right now, especially with an M-X sensor. We have more demand now than ever for them.

1. Will you be making a much lighter weight set of Red Pro Primes one day?

Jim:
1. Good, cheap, light... pick any two. Smile We are always looking to improve. But that is not going to happen next week.

1. Will the older RocketCine software continue to be supported?

Rob:
1. We're focusing on one application of that type to get it the best we can.

Jim:
1. All features from RocketCine will end up in REDCINE-X at some point.

1. Is there any chance at all that Stage 3.5 camera owners will be given a financial incentive to keep their Red One cameras? (Perhaps an option similar to Stage 2, but without the free modules.)

Jim:
1. Under consideration...

1. Any chance we'll see film schools offering official RED training and/or support from RED in the future?[/b][/i][/color]

Jarred:
1. We indeed are working on expanding the REDucation program into an official curriculum for educational institutions interested in such... that is something that Ted has been working diligently on for the last couple months.

1. Any consideration for a RAW module for EPIC now that portable RAW recorders are 4k capable and have come down in price and size?

Jim:
1. We think shooting uncompressed RAW is nonsense... especially if you consider a 2.5:1 REDCODE for EPIC. I'll bet anyone any amount that can tell the difference without looking at the file size.

1. Is there any type of lens mount that Scarlet and Epic WON'T be able to use?
2. How much smaller will Scarlet's body be compared to the Epic?
3. How has the design of the RED Scarlet been affected by the process of designing and making EPIC?
4. Learned any lessons while making EPIC that will make the development process of Scarlet a bit faster?

Jim:
1. I'm sure there are... but they probably won't be lenses you would want to use. Our open lens format is just that...
2. Some... exact detail before we ship.
3. It has been affected... delay one one delayed the other. See post #1.
4. They are really going in parallel.

1. Do you think that the Scarlet will be available by the end of the year?

Jim:
1. Yes.

1. Can you give us more info on the Red HMI light controller?

Jarred:
1. No new information to add. Smile

1. What is the main difference between Scarlet S35 and EPIC-X ?

Jim:
1. Frame rates and data rates... heat generation and cooling system. Less boards and simpler construction. Several other smaller points but those are the main ones.

1. Any chance of a studio/triax/multi-pin module (and CCU/remote) to make these cinema cameras into studio cameras?

Deanan:
1. Camera control can happen through wifi/ethernet/redmote/serial.
Way more flexible and powerful than a CCU. HDSDI and ethernet can be multiplexed over fiber. And audio could be sent over ethernet. There's lots of flexibility to add capability without designing new hardware.

1. Any new REDray info?

Jim:
1. REDray is close... demos going on at the Studios now.

1. Whats the status on the RED PRO Anamorphic Lenses?

Jim:
1. Coming along... next year. They will be very cool.

1. Will there be a RED Matte Box released with EPIC?

Jarred:
1. Yes.

1. Will your best REDCODE actually be mathematically lossless?

Jim:
1. Yes. 2.5:1 REDCODE.

1. How many production EPICs do you plan to release at a time following the TATTOO program?
2. Will you make an announcement on the forum before the emails start to go out?

Jim:
1. Lots.
2. Yes.

1. Do your engineers foresee a day when a RED XXX sensor will have MORE dynamic range than even the best film negative?

Jim:
1. Absolutely... that is why modular matters.

1. On Scarlet, are the 1/8th inch audio in's going to be pre-amped?

Stuart:
1. Yes, these audio inputs accept microphone level signals, so they do provide pre-amps.

1. Will there be anyway to have servo zoom and focus controls mounted on a tripod for lenses that have zoom motors?

Jarred:
1. The REDmote and REDmote PRO (as well as the Side Handle etc.) will be able to control motors inside lenses such as Canon, Nikon, Fuji, etc... provided of course you have the accompanied electronic lens mount on the EPIC/Scarlet.

1. Do you have any info on approximately how much more bandwidth EPIC will have than R1?

Jim:
1. The difference between REDCODE 42 and REDCODE 250. 24fps is about 2.5:1 compression. Mathematically lossless.

1. What sort of compression will we have for stills on EPIC-X?
2. Will there be a dedicated stills file format? Or will it roll the stills we shoot into an R3D file?
3. Will EPIC-X be able to do long-exposure shots?

Deanan:
1. REDCODE
2. R3D will have a subset stills format but even more exciting is the 'DSMC' portion of the format.
3. Yes

1. Is there a ProRes proxy module in the works?

Jim:
1. We have not announced anything ProRes for EPIC... although anything can happen. We need to get these cameras finished before we start fooling around with other stuff.

1. Are EPIC modules and accessories on track so they will readily available when EPIC ships?

Jim:
1. Yes. Most of the important ones anyway.

1. Will the RED bricks still be available when EPIC & Scarlet are out?
2. Can you tell us a bit more about the touch focus LCD? Do they work like the iPhone touch focus where you have to keep touching the screen to focus or will they be able to do focus tracking whilst keeping subjects in focus at all times?
3. You've said that EPICs are getting made in the US - whats your estimation of how many you will be able to produce per month?

Jim:
1. Yes to REDbricks
2. Just as you would hope.
3. Depends on the orders. We expect to sell a lot of EPICs.

1. Any way to incorporate a tally light notification?

Stuart:
1. Getting a tally back to the camera is pretty trivial - either via wireless, Ethernet or GPI contact closure.

1. If REDCODE 250 stands for "2.5":1 does that equate REDCODE 42 to "4.2" (or less likely "42") :1

Jarred:
1. This will be cleared up very soon...

Deanan:
1. 2.5 to 1 is the compression ratio.

REDcode 42 = ~7.5:1
REDcode 36 = ~9:1
REDcode 28 = ~10:1

1. Will there be an HDR mode upon release of EPIC?

Jim:
1. Not on release. Shortly (hopefully) after.

1. A FF sensor would be nice with the RED PRO Anamorphics. How is the Monstro program moving along?

Jim:
1. Saw 1st images from slice. Impressive.

1. Will the REDray (PRO) support the playback of stereo R3D footage?
2. Can we sync two RAD-RAYs (normal) for the playback of stereo R3D footage?

Jarred:
1. You can count on 3D support for REDray as above. Stuart will elaborate.

Stuart:
1. The RED-RAY PRO player can play back .R3D footage at up to 4K RGB output resolution, and we can Genlock two players for stereo .R3D playback capability.

1. What is the zoom range for the fixed lens Scarlet?

Jarred:
1. FF35 Equivalent of 28mm-224mm.

1. Any "wishful" ETA (or any progress news for that matter) about the 6x17 28K Epic brain?

Jim:
1. End of 2011 or early 2012. Everything has been delayed unfortunately.

1. Is the FF Monstro sensor on course?

Jim:
1. FF35 Monstro is trailing EPIC S35 by a reasonable amount of time.

1. Have you tested any mini primes?
2. Any plans for mini zooms?

Jim:
1. Yes.
2. No.

1. Will REDmote Pro release with Epic?

Jim:
1. Not at the same time as the initial release.

1. What kind of power options and battery life we could expect from the Scarlet 2/3" Fixed?

Jim:
1. Low power draw so a long battery life.

1. Will there be RED designed & made wide-screen and tele-photo adapters for the fixed lens Scarlet?

Jarred:
1. Not out of the gate.. but others will work (remember, 8x has standard 77mm threads up front)

1. Any update on having the ability to trim .R3D files?

Rob:
1. Working on that right now.

1. What feature do you think isn't talked about enough/has the most under respected and least talked about impact/is just rad and you just love?

Jim:
1. 5K REDCODE at 120fps. Simple. No matter what is said, this is truly a miracle.

1. Are there any plans for RED lenses for the eventual 6x17 format?

Jarred:
1. Yes

1. What modules will be released with the 2/3" package?

Jim:
1. All the same modules will be available as with EPIC. Both cameras use the same interface and modules... which is why this system is so nice.

1. Can we sync two RED Rockets for the same purpose?

Deanan:
1. Stereo syncing of rockets outputs isn't possible on the current rocket boards but you can play back stereo from two rockets through a GPU like you currently can in scratch.

1. What's your stance on 3rd party modules? Will you release a "module SDK", or will you keep it proprietary?

Jim:
1. We'll open up after we get the system dialed in and out there...

1. It looks like there is a 1/8" audio in on the EPIC brain, is that correct?

Jarred:
1. Correct.

1. Does Red have any distant future plans to pursue super high-speed frame rates like those approaching what the Phantom or Weisscam are now capable of?

Jim:
1. I think EPIC gives you 2K at 250fps. Anything more than that needs a specialty camera... for now.

1. Is the Fixed 2/3" Scarlet still likely to be the first Scarlet out of the box? (i.e. before interchangeable and the S35).

Jarred:
1. Yes.

1. Can you comment on what will be used to power the camera in the fixed Scarlet kit?

Jarred:
1. Sorry guys.. still too early to answer, since it depends on the kit which has not been completely finalized.

1. Do you have a ballpark idea as to when you will be caught up with M-X upgrades. And, when you ARE caught up, will new RED ONEs come with M-X?

Jim:
1. Everything depends on how many people want to upgrade... we are moving along at a rapid pace right now. My bet is that 50-65% of the RED ONEs will get upgraded. Every one of them should be upgraded IMHO. The value going forward will be RED ONE M-X cameras.

1. Regarding the mysterious feature "#21" that has not been revealed yet, is this a development, or a big feature you want your competition to be kept in the dark on?

Jarred:
1. You guys will not know what #21 is until it is released.

Jim:
1. We are no longer in the business of giving our competitors a "heads up" on what comes next. RED is the place to be if you are interested in the future...

Jim:
1. #21... my favorite thing in the whole world.

1. What is the status on the CF REDStation?

Jarred:
1. CF REDStation is done.. just waiting on the FCC.. which is VERY close. Its down to the external cables now. Smile

1. Since the Scarlet Fixed is supposed to be ready to shoot out of the box, does this mean it will come with a CF card?

Jim:
1. Nope... you have to decide which one.

1. Will EPIC have more features for S3D shooting?

Deanan:
1. Yes. Epic has alot of stereo features including a shutter sync that's not limited to genlock framerates.

1. Does the fixed scarlet still have two ND filters in it?

Jarred:
1. Yes.. ND 0.9 and 1.8.

1. Any update on the MX's faster read/reset times? My understanding is this was scrapped due to a sensor calibration issue.

Jim:
1. Not scrapped...

1. What is the status of an EPIC SDK?

Deanan:
1. EPIC support in the SDK will be out to developers far before shipping cameras.

1. Are the LCD monitors also updating to a newer model and is this the reason they are on back order?

Jarred:
1. There are touchscreens coming for EPIC/Scarlet , but we still are making the 5" and 7" LCD's for the RED ONE right now, as the R1 cannot take advantage of the touchscreen. EPIC, however, can use the new and old EVF's, and the current LCD's (just with no touchscreen functions of course).

1. Is there any chance that we can give our EPIC/Scarlets a name and have RED properly stamp them for an added fee?

Jim:
1. Yes... we love custom stuff.
