What do I wait for Epic:
- very high dynamic range (better than any film)
- global shutter
- more than three colour channels (Sharp Quad Pixel: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow? Sony RGBE: Red, Green, Blue, Emerald?) (http://dvice.com/archives/2010/01/how-does-1-tril.php) (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sonydscf828/)
- more than 12 bits per colour channel
- very wide colour space (XvYCC? ProPhoto RGB?)
- ability to use no compression at all

This is quite a list. Can you please tell us more about the productions you are working on?
I would be curious as to how having some of these features would be used on your particular projects (aside of 3D).
Can you explain why any of these very specific requests are important to you and how they compare to what is already available?

I have some plans for a hard sci-fi movie with life-like colours and high dynamic range. They say I should choose film, but I think it is now time to move on (to the digital world).
Scenes inside a car are troublesome. The outside world always seems to be completely white unless it is a fake scenery (blue screen, green screen). I would like to shoot the movie with little to no artificial light and still catch most of the bright and dark objects at the same time. |

To make both dark and bright objects to be visible at the same time. Imagine the movie looking something like these HDR photos.

New television sets support XvYCC, so this shouldn't be too far-fetched.

To avoid any compressions artifacts. Of course this option needs very wide bandwidth and lots of storage space.

To be future-proof. You can always make 2D movie from 3D material, but it is very difficult to make 3D movie from 2D material, so better to be future-proof. |

I propose a new 3x3 colour filter array (RGBCMYW) for Red cameras:
WRG
BWC
MYW
R = Red
G = Green
B = Blue
C = Cyan
M = Magenta
Y = Yellow
W = White
If I am not entirely wrong, using cyan, magenta, yellow and white channels gives better dynamic range. Of course, one should also use the regular red, green and blue channels. Please, see this. |

Yes, that's an impressive wish list. Sure there are technical issues with any Camera, and I know that Film Cameras have many of the same problems, or others that we are now so used to we don't even think about, and just do the workaround.
As far as the projects you are interested in, what Camera are you using now?

By the way, EPIC's specs should make you pretty happy, as they will rival or surpass most Cameras available today, both Film or Digital...

EPIC's Mysterium-X Sensor's read reset time is said to now be at 5ns (I believe this was compared to 4ns for Film), so there is not much of a difference there anymore. The helicopter shot is an extreme example (and is easier to notice in a still image), but I'm sure over time, read reset times will get even faster.

Who knows what will happen in this realm. A lot of it has to do with post workflow as well.

RED took orders for the RED ONE's uncompressed output module, and got no orders after people saw the quality of REDCODE RAW (Compressed). It may happen one day, but as of now, the technology is so good, there really is no need for it and you would have very large files for no particular reason.

Obviously, this is already possible as RED has been on many 3D Features and projects (My Bloody Valentine 3D). Currently, the Nicolas Cage movie, "Drive Angry" is being shot on RED in 3D.

I am a Master of Science in Physics and I do not have a prior experience in movie industry. I don't have access to movie cameras... |

Yes, the bandwidth and storage space demands are quite high without compression.
RED Epic 645 - 9K: 9334*7000*(7*16)*48 bit/s < 352 Gbit/s
UHDV: 7680*4320*(7*16)*48 bit/s < 179 Gbit/s
RED Epic FF35 - 6K: 6000*4000*(7*16)*48 bit/s < 130 Gbit/s
RED Epic S35 - 5K: 5120*2700*(7*16)*48 bit/s < 75 Gbit/s
I have assumed 7 colour channels and 16 bits for each channel and a frame rate of 48 fps (IMAX HD (48 fps)).
As we can see, one 100 Gbit/s Ethernet port is more than enough for RED Epic S35 with seven colour channels, 16-bit colours and 48 fps... |
