Which well known Directors and DPs do you think will first embrace the Red camera for a future project?
I think Robert Rodriguez might top the list. After all, he shoots digitally, he is a bit of a rebel himself, and named his company "Troublemaker Studios". _________________ Casey Green

Whoever can wrangle a free unit from Red's marketing department (even just to 'borrow' for a few months), thats who. You couldn't buy that kind of exposure, it would be more than worth it. |

Well the trick here, I think, is that the DP usually will help decide which format(s) are used... but renegade guys like Rodriguez often double as DP/Camera Operator, so I think that also puts him high on the list.
Steven Soderbergh also often does his own Camera work and likes to combine different looks from Video and Film.
Since choosing a look and workflow for a Film is such a big decision, I wouldn't necessarily say that getting a donated camera from Red's marketing dept. would be enough to convince anyone to use it. There will be many unknowns to deal with, and necessary extra test shoots for a Director and DP to feel confident taking the risk of entering the uncharted territory any new technology may present.
It took George Lucas many years to decide to shoot in HD, and Spielberg has resisted it for a long time... (his reasons being more personal though):
"...I feel I work best in the conventional realm. I just like the purity of actually being able to touch film and see it on a screen after threading it through a projector. I like cutting my finger occasionally on a strip of film. I like the craft of it. To me, and this is just a personal preference, the difference between cutting on the Avid and a Moviola is like the difference between making something on the potter's wheel with your hands, or designing a pot in a computer and pressing a button and having a machine at a factory make it for you. It's just not the same thing. Just say I like to get my hands dirty.”
With that said, I am curious as to which well-known filmmakers will decide to embrace the Red One and take the plunge... _________________ Casey Green

This was recently announced from the folks at Red Digital Cinema:
"Director Timur Bekmambetov of Bazlevs Film in Moscow, has chosen the RED ONE digital camera for all the digital cinematography used in Universal Pictures', WANTED, staring Angelia Jolie, Morgan Freeman and James McAvoy. Though the body of the movie will be shot in film, there is a substantial digital component to the filming which will be used by Bekmambetov's VFX and production company in Russia. Wanted begins shooting in Prague in April, 2007." _________________ Casey Green

Interesting... Peter Jackson may be a reservation holder. See this thread:

Could be they are putting a few prototypes through the paces at Weta? Anyone heard more on this? _________________ Casey Green
