Thanks for the link, dr.bootleg.
While interesting, I think the Engadget article may not be entirely accurate. Here is the original article from Akihabara News:
http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-18076-JVC%20intros%20a%20new%208%20and%204k%20video%20projector%20and%20a%204k%20compact%20Video%20Camera.html
At NAB 2009, JVC demonstrated a prototype of a 4K (actually 3840 x 2160) 60fps Live Camera (the KY-F4000) which was connected to their 56-inch LCD 4K Display, but there was no mention of an 8K Camera or a recording format in 4K. It seemed they were gearing this towards special live markets. Here is what their press release said:
"Other 4K cameras on the market, such as RED and Arri, are primarily used for cinema applications which do not require live signal output. This makes JVC the unique choice for high-end applications including:
* Teleconference - Corporate/military conference systems can fully utilize 4K display systems (already installed) with cameras that can bring a new level of realism to remote conferencing.
* CAD/Design
* Distance Learning - 4K imaging can provide the ultimate real-time experience in a learning situations especially those involving live demonstrations and procedures."
Also, I believe when the article spoke of 8K, they probably got the facts mixed up, as the original article only mentioned 8K when talking about the D-ILA 3 (RGB) 8k and 4k video projector.
I'm sure JVC will eventually release a 4K Camera, but it will be quite some time, since they do not have any 4K recording mechanism or workflow in place. Also, keep in mind that there are not really any live 4K Production Switchers and Graphics and FX Boxes out there yet. Also, the numbers circulating for the KY-F4000 are anywhere from $100K-$200K, a far cry from RED's affordability. Seems very niche market to me.
