RED has just announced that the first batch of RED RAM drives arrived today and will start shipping in order of backorder.
The dual solid state drive system comes configured as a 128GB RAID 0, and is the same physical size as the RED DRIVE (which uses standard spinning platters HDs instead and is setup as a 320GB RAID 0).
Although the older RED DRIVE costs much less ($900) and has a larger capacity (320GB), RED RAM (128GB) uses "solid state" media which means there are no moving parts. Think of it as two large memory cards setup in a RAID 0 format. The advantage here is that you no longer need to be concerned with vibrations or bumps to the Camera, which can cause spinning media to malfunction.
RED RAM runs at 120 fps in 2K, 60 fps 3K, 30 fps 4K with RECODE 36 and 16 x 9 aspect.
The same drive cradle and cable can be used as the RED DRIVE if you already have them, or they can be ordered separately.
One nice surprise is that the RED RAMs are now painted in a shade of Dark Grey instead of Black like the normal RED DRIVEs, to be able to easily tell them apart.
Price: $4,500.00
