This was just released (Dec. 3rd) from Jim Jannard, owner of RED Digital Cinema:

"Obsolescence Obsolete... really?

It is a great concept that we fully embrace and believe in. We also care a lot about those that trusted us from the beginning. We had expected that the RED ONE would carry the "OO" banner for many years to come. And it just may, as we continue to deliver free firmware upgrades with significant feature enhancements. We also said we would offer a RED ONE sensor upgrade to keep it current in a world of ever-improving electronics. We have kept that promise with a Mysterium-X upgrade path when it is finished, then to the Monstro sensor which will follow.

What we had not counted on was that we would take "interchangeable and upgradeable" to a higher level, which we have done with EPIC and Scarlet. So what do we do for our RED ONE customers to keep "Obsolescence Obsolete" alive for them? We do exactly what we promised... and more. When EPIC was 1st announced, we offered a full $17,500 trade-in allowance on a $40K EPIC. While that offer is still valid, EPIC changed and so did the consideration for our RED ONE owners including options for a discount on Scarlet. Now, things have changed again and we have modified the RED ONE allowance program to match the current offerings.

So... I own a RED ONE. What are my options?

1. Keep your RED ONE and shoot great images. Get continual free firmware upgrades.

2. Keep your RED ONE and upgrade your sensor to Mysterium-X for $4,500.

3. Trade your RED ONE in, and receive $17,500 credit, towards the purchase of an EPIC-X S35 Private Reserve package, which is only available to RED ONE customers.

4. Trade your RED ONE in, and receive $17,500 credit, towards the purchase of an EPIC FF35 Pro Cinema "Brain".

5. Trade your RED ONE in, and receive $17,500 credit, towards the purchase of an EPIC 645 Pro "Brain".

6. Trade your RED ONE in, and receive $17,500 credit, towards the purchase of an EPIC 617 Pro "Brain".

7. Keep your RED ONE and purchase a Scarlet System (one time only) with a 12% discount.

"Use one time only". Any selection of #3-#7 causes your RED ONE to be marked "Executed" and will no longer qualify for an additional consideration, including discounts, trade-ins or special packages.

Everything changes and improves in this industry. "Obsolescence Obsolete" means giving our customers a path (or paths) to upgrade to new technology so they don't have to buy a new camera every time a new sensor, feature or capability is introduced. We remain ever committed to this concept."

So... what changed from Nov. 13th to Dec. 3rd?

A lot. We were a bit frustrated with certain system limitations with respect to digital signal processing and REDCODE data rates inside the "brains" so we took steps to more completely control our development process from start to finish, including all aspects of the electronics design and sensor fabrication. Additionally, our RED engineering team came up with a radical new approach to overcoming some of the previous system limitations. Given all these factors, we were able to re-write the system specs, to the benefit of our customers. We felt no compulsion to keep these advances a secret. So here we are.

Delivery. What about that?

We have been known for being "fashionably late". We are frankly still very new at building cameras. While we seem to have a much better understanding of what it is we are doing... there is still room for us to miscalculate. On top of that, many technological advances are occurring during the development process. We are implementing as many "changes for the better" as we can even though we are near the end of this system's development. The incredible new specs we are announcing today does come with a justifiably slight schedule hit. Certainly worth a few extra weeks in our opinion. Hence, "Prices, specifications and delivery dates are subject to drastic changes". Count on it and you won't be disappointed.

Here are a couple new renders released. Noticed the new modules in between the I/O module and Battery module?

The first is the new "DUAL CF MODULE", while the second, "RED MAG" (in red paint) is most likely a Solid State 128GB Drive.
