It has been posted online that David Fincher is currently shooting a new Nike commercial on RED Cameras (possibly for the upcoming Olympics or an upcoming Pro Sports season).
This is very interesting news, as it marks a shift from his previous preferred Cameras and workflows. Much of Finchers recent projects have been shot on the Thomson Viper FilmStream Camera and recorded to the S.two data capture system.
Our Union (Local 695 - Sound and Video) held a training session on the S2 for our operators, and it looked so archaic. It is common practice to delete unwanted takes just to save hard drive space during the day. That scares me. Also, the capture system with it's digital mags is extremely large compared to the RED's drive system (and of course the 16GB CF cards are insanely small on the RED).
Also, the Viper only can shoot 1080p up to 29.97fps (compared to RED's 2K at 120fps, 3K at 60fps, and 4K at 30fps.)
I think Fincher is going to be blown away by the difference in quality and workflow. Can't wait to hear the results.

Here are some photos taken during the shoot of the spot. They were taken from a cell phone of one of the crew, so they are not the best quality.
Looks like RED #31 is getting quite a workout...
