Jim Jannard posted this online this past week:

"Since you all have waited so long for this infamous build, I think it is only fair to tell you some of it's advantages.

1. We will re-rate the camera's ISO.

2. There will be less noise.

3. There will be no "compression issues" in difficult scenes.

4. There will be a new "working space".

5. It will be much easier to set exposure.

6. You will have too many options... Smile

And a few others.

Please be warned. Build 16 does NOT make the RED ONE perfect. We live in a real world. But it does fully demonstrate our commitment to constant progress. It was only 8 months ago that we shipped our 1st cameras. The amount of improvement since then is incredible, even to us. And we are not about to stop. We are learning everyday. At some point, we will know more than the other guys ever dreamed about.... then, we will be dangerous."

More information was released today by Jim about what to expect from the infamous Build 16 Firmware Update:

"So what can you expect from Build 16? Many things. But here are the BIG THREE.

1. Less noise. While the RED ONE is considered a very low noise camera, it can always be better. Like many digital cameras, the toughest areas for RED footage is tungsten lighting. Build 16 improves noise characteristics in all situations, particularly in the worst conditions. You can still generate noise, but it is measurably better. The volume is less and the type is much less egregious. If you have ever checked the blue channel under magnification of difficult footage you will know what "chicken scratch" is. That is gone in Build 16. This allows you to dig "deeper" into the shadows during grading with less consequence.

2. Dynamic range. While you subtly gain range because the noise floor is lower, there are other factors that contribute to range. It may seem counter-intuitive but a higher ISO has more dynamic range in contrasty scenes than a lower ISO. Many simply believe that you should select a lower ISO outside in daylight. While this has been discussed here by a few, it has been a struggle at times with previous builds to set ISO and exposure depending on the circumstances. Your meter tells you one thing, the histogram another... and if you get those two to make sense, the LCD looks a bit dark. So there is a temptation to open up your aperture (effectively selecting a lower ISO) and losing range when it wasn't necessary. If you were too cautious the other way, you ended up with a dark image and noise when you dragged it out of the dirt. Build 16, with our new REDspace, does wonders to make all your exposure clues line up better. And with some simple ISO guidance, you will understand why a select few are actually very happy with the latitude of a RED ONE. Some simple tips and your camera will increase in range because you will be getting the most out of it.

3. SDK. Now that we are finishing Build 16 prototypes for Alpha release, we can begin the process of developing the SDK we promised. We fully recognize the importance of more options for our customers. We will march through this process as fast as we can.

There are many more enhancements to Build 16 that will be listed the day the Beta is released. Please don't ask what they are or "if this or that" is included. We don't have a firm Beta release date. That will be determined by the feedback from the Alpha testers.

Thanks again for your patience."
