RED Alert! was actually an in-house only tool in the beginning for RED R&D, but was eventually released since it was ready before REDCINE and also offered certain features that REDCINE didn't, such as quicktime proxy creation. RED Alert! only runs on Intel MAC OSX, and it's code is written to use the CPU(s) for main processing. RED Alert! also has additional apps built around it's engine - REDLine a command line version, and REDrushes, a simplified GUI version meant to be used as a tool to quickly make Dailies or other purposes.
REDCINE was written both by RED and ASSIMILATE (which it is really a lite version of the popular grading software called SCRATCH, as you can see by the UI design). REDCINE is available for both Windows XP/Vista and Intel MAC OSX. It differs from RED Alert! in that it has a lot more controls available, which some people like and others find tricky. If you don't know what you are doing, you can create settings that are outside the normal accepted values for the color space you are working in, however this control also allows for greater control if you are an experienced colorist. REDCINE also mainly uses the GPU for processing, so render times are different depending on your system's hardware. Third party tools, such as CRIMSON also have been made to work with REDCINE by use of XML file importing for conforming purposes.
Since each offers different strengths, they both continue to be updated and made available to RED Users.
Both apps are available as downloads when the party agrees to the RED Software License Agreement.
