SUMMARY:

Enhanced Color Matrix, with decreased Blue channel noise, especially under tungsten lighting, increased skin tone accuracy on RED-EVF, RED-LCD, and HD-SDI outputs, modified False Color meters for RAW, REC709 and REDspace views, modified Zebra 1 and 2 defaults, modified microphone level default, 48V Phantom Power maintained over power cycle, fixed ""audio codec error" and “green flash” on audio enabled clip play back from RED-DRIVE, fixed camera reboot on clip playback from RED-DRIVE, fixed camera reboot on communications error from S4/i lens data port, corrected Look Around area on HD-SDI and HDMI outputs for 4K ANA / 3K ANA / 2K ANA modes, changed USER KEY 4 to VIEW RAW, changed USER KEY 5 to COLOR.

WARNING: Read all instructions contained in the installation files before upgrading. Before upgrading to Build 20, you must have first upgraded to Build 16, 17, or 18. Once the RED ONE is upgraded to Build 20, you will NOT be able to roll back to Build 15 or earlier builds.

Exposure assist tools in this version of firmware have been updated as follows: Adjusted Sensor RAW meter highlight clip indication response, Adjusted black level response of RGB monitor path / RGB Histogram / HDMI / HD-SDI output(s), Corrected FALSE COLOR error in VIEW RAW mode, Re-calibration and simplification of FALSE COLOR overlay for RAW, REC709 and REDspace.

Notes:

* Before upgrading to Build 20, you must have first upgraded to Build 16, 17 or 18.

* After upgrading to Build 20, it is NOT POSSIBLE to revert to Build 15 or earlier.

* After upgrading to Build 20, on-camera playback of media recorded by earlier builds may not be possible, nor can you add additional clips to digital media formatted under an earlier build. Ensure you reformat any digital media before shooting under Build 20.

* Download the companion versions of RED Alert! (Version 20.1.6 or later) and REDCINE (Version 20.0.0 or later). TIFF, DPX and standalone QuickTime files rendered out of RED Alert! or REDCINE from Build 20 .R3D files will provide consistent color to the camera monitor ports.

* The current version of RED QuickTime Codec and other post production tools will be compatible with Build 20 .R3D files and QuickTime Reference files, but these applications need to be updated before reflecting the new Color Science. If using these tools, note that the colors of the RED ONE monitor output, RED Alert! and REDCINE will not match up to these applications. Therefore you should perform an additional white balance prior to editing or other color processing.

* Use of RED Alert! (Version 20.1.2 or later) and REDCINE (Version 20.0.0 or later) on pre-Build 20 camera firmware .R3D files can improve color purity and dynamic range and lower blue channel noise, however you should re-white balance prior to performing other color processing.

Installation Instructions for RED-ONE Build 20 v20.1.3 camera firmware:

* This upgrade is fully contained in the folder " build_20_v20.1.3 "

* In that folder is a copy of this Read Me file and the folder named " upgrade "

* The " upgrade " folder includes the camera firmware upgrade file " redone.su "
o WARNING: Do NOT rename this folder, the camera only opens a folder named " upgrade "
o WARNING: Do NOT decompress the " redone.su " file, the camera will perform that task.

* Format a CF card using Build 16, 17 or 18.

* Connect the CF card to your P.C or Macintosh via a CF card reader.

* Copy the folder called " upgrade " onto the CF card.

* Unmount the CF card from your computer (drag to the trash can).

* Ensure your camera is powered down.

* Insert the CF card into the CF card slot of your RED-ONE camera.

* Power up the camera.

* After booting up, the camera rear status display will report " New Firmware " and the RED-EVF or RED-LCD will report “A software update is available for your system”

* Press the joystick to confirm, and the rear status display will report " Upgrading "

* During the upgrade process, a blue progress bar will be visible on the RED-EVF or RED-LCD. This bar will continue for the duration of the upgrade, which is approximately five minutes.

* At the end of the upgrade process, the rear status display will report “O.K. Cycle Power” The RED-LCD or RED-LCD will report " Upgrade complete. Power cycle the camera to continue. "

* Power down the camera, wait five seconds, then power up the camera.

* Verify that the camera rear status display and or monitors report back – " PIN (value specific to camera) Build 20 Version 20.1.3 "

* Installation is now complete.

Note: After the firmware upgrade, re-format the CF card and perform a BLACK SHADING calibration

Significant changes since beta Build 18 v3.6.4 firmware.:

* Enhanced Color Matrix.

* Decreased noise in blue channel, especially under tungsten lighting.

* Increased accuracy of skin tones on RED-EVF, RED-LCD, and HD-SDI monitor outputs.

* 48V Phantom Power maintained over power cycle (for Rev B audio boards only).

* Headphone output level maintained over power cycle.

* Zebra 1 default changed to ENABLED, with LO IRE 101 and HI IRE 108.

* Zebra 2 default changed to DISABLED, with LO IRE 0 and HI IRE 3.

* Fixed ""audio codec error" with audio enabled clip playback from RED-DRIVE.

* Fixed “green flash” with audio enabled clip playback from RED-DRIVE.

* Fixed random camera reboot on clip playback from RED-DRIVE.

* Fixed random camera reboot on communications error from S4/i lens data port.
o Note: If camera encounters data error it will disable S4/i port until next power cycle.
o Note: Reading lens data from Cooke brand S4/i lens is not supported under this Build.

* Corrected Look Around area on HD-SDI and HDMI outputs for 4K ANA / 3K ANA / 2K ANA mode.

* Corrected FALSE COLOR error in VIEW RAW mode (previously inaccurate if selected by USER KEY).

* Simplified and re-calibration FALSE COLOR overlay for RAW, REC709 and REDspace.

Note: False Color in REC 709 / REDSpace shows RGB monitor levels, and responds to ISO changes. When in these view modes you can verify RAW space sensor exposure using the Sensor RAW meter. False Color in RAW view mode shows RAW space sensor exposure and matches the Sensor RAW meter. At ISO 320, RAW / REC 709 / REDspace display of 18% Grey (Green) can be considered equivalent.

False Colors provide the following information:

* Purple – Minimum Exposure
* Teal – 3 stops under reference
* Green – Reference Exposure for 18% Grey Card
* Pink – Reference Exposure for Caucasian Skin
* Straw – 2 stops over reference
* Yellow – 2/3 stop under maximum exposure
* Orange – 1/3 stop under maximum exposure
* Red – Maximum Exposure

At all other picture values, the image displayed is the luminance value of the original scene.

For example, when imaging a standard 5-stop Chip Chart, Black chip will show Teal, 18" Grey chip will show Green, White chip will show Straw and Skin Tone chip will show Pink false color bands.
