Current Release Version is Build 30 (v30.5.0)
Current Beta Version is Build 30 (v30.6.0)

(All versions listed below in order of oldest to newest - scroll to bottom of last page for the latest.)


WARNING: It is highly recommended to only use the current Release Version during Productions.
Beta Versions are for testing new features and working out bugs. Older Builds are also listed below.

Build 4, RED ONE camera firmware v1.0.4 Sept 7th, 2007


New Items:

Reduced Fan Speed on Record, Improved Frame Guides, Improved Rear Status Display

Installation Instructions:

* Click on the 1.7.0 firmware download link at www.red.com/support web site

* Verify that the folder ” build_4_red_one_v1.0.4 ” appears on your desktop

* Follow the instructions contained in the ” build_4_red_one_v1.0.4_readme ” file included in that folder.

Changes since last release:

* Recording resolution has been temporarily fixed at 4K 2:1. The RESOLUTION parameter has been temporarily removed from SYSTEM / PROJECT / CONFIGURE.

* Frame rates of 29.97 and 30.00 have been temporarily removed.

* Frame Guides have been updated to better outline the recorded area, and include centered 2.40:1 and 1.85:1 frame guides. USER 1 and USER 2 guides are factory preset, they are not user adjustable.

* The default CURSORS setting is picture CENTER, but ACTION and TITLE may still be selected. Default COLOR for the frame guide and cursors is WHITE.

* 16:9, 14:9 and 4:3 ACTION and TITLE CURSORS are correctly aligned to the image center.

* Slower fan speed on record is now operational. The default setting is QUIET. See SYSTEM/SETUP/MAINTENANCE/FAN to adjust.

* Default monitor output is now HD-SDI. Camera will remember an alternative setting across power cycles if changed in SYSTEM / MONITOR / OUTPUT menu.

* Terminology in the ACTIVE menu has been updated. now EVF, LCD, HDMI, HDSDI

* Rear status display properly reports the true status of the digital media.

* Rear status display now reports no media as ” X ” rather than ” NoN “

* The camera now prevents multiple Project Frame Rates from being recorded on a single piece of digital media. If the media is formatted for 23.98 fps it will not allow a 24.00 or 25.00 project to be recorded to it. Variable frame rates recording, when enabled, will still be possible. This lock only only refers to Project Frame Rate.

* The OUTPUT EFFECTS parameters have been re-located to the VIEWFINDER menu. AV MENU / VIEWFINDER / EFFECTS. Choices are Normal (COLOR check box unchecked), MONOCHROME and FALSE COLOR (COLOR check box checked)

* The RECORD LOCK parameter has been removed from the MAGAZINE menu.

* The menu previously labeled “WHITE BALANC” is now labeled “COLOR TEMP”

Known restrictions:

* 29.97 and 30.00 fps recording not supported in this release

* 4K 16:9 recording is not supported in this release

* 2K recording is not supported in this release

* Display to RED-EVF is not supported in this release.

* Two or more monitor outputs simultaneously active is not yet supported.

* Recording to RED-RAID and RED-RAM is not supported in this release

* Variable Frame Rate (VariSpeed) is not supported in this release

* Frame rate ramping is not supported in this release.

* TimeLapse is not supported in this release.

* Clip playback is not supported in this release.

* Audio is not supported in this release.

* Cannot reset TIME value in TIMECODE menu – must reset using terminal connection.

* Dual LInk HD-SDI outputs always replicate PREVIEW HD-SDI signal.

Installation Instructions for RED-ONE Beta Build 16 v3.2.5 camera firmware.


* This upgrade is fully contained in the folder ” build_16_v3.2.5 “

* In that folder is a copy of this Read Me file and the folder named ” upgrade “

* The ” upgrade ” folder includes the camera firmware upgrade file ” redone.su “

* DO NOT rename this folder, the camera only opens a folder named ” upgrade “

* Do NOT decompress the ” redone.su ” file, the camera will perform that task.

* Format a CF card using Build 15 v2.2.8 (or an earlier version of Build 16)

* Connect the CF card to your P.C or Macintosh via a CF card reader.

* Copy the folder called ” upgrade ” onto the CF card.

* Unmount the CF card from your computer (drag to the trash can)

* Ensure your camera is powered down.

* Insert the CF card into the CF card slot of your RED-ONE camera.

* Power up the camera.

* After booting up, the camera rear status display will report ” New Firmware ” and the RED-EVF or RED-LCD will report “A software update is available for your system”

* Press the joystick to confirm, and the rear status display will report ” Upgrading “

* During the upgrade process, a blue progress bar will be visible on the RED-EVF or RED-LCD. This bar will continue for the duration of the upgrade, which is approximately five minutes.

* At the end of the upgrade process, the rear status display will report “O.K. Cycle Power” The RED-LCD or RED-LCD will report ” Upgrade complete. Power cycle the camera to continue. “

* Power down the camera, wait five seconds, then power up the camera.

* Verify that the camera rear status display and or monitors report back –

PIN (value specific to camera) Build 16 Version 3.2.5

* Installation is now complete.


Note: After the firmware upgrade, re-format the CF card prior to recording.

Operational restrictions of Build 16 series firmware:

* If using a 16GB CF card, upgrade file is not erased at the end of the upgrade process.

* If using a 16GB card, dropped frames may be possible in Pre-Record

* On power up, monitors may display Blue channel only – if so power cycle.

* LCD tearing may sometimes be visible in lower 10% of screen with 4K footage.

* Genlock (Tri-Level Sync) for 50.00 fps has not yet been verified.

* Non Build 16 formatted media will report “DISK INCOMPATIBLE”- reformat to clear.

* Image Magnify is not available during recording at 4K resolutions.

* Edge Code not available from LEMO 5 timecode connector.

* Audio and Timecode not embedded on HD-SDI outputs.

* 1080p HD-SDI outputs do not support PsF signal formatting option.

* COLOR exposure meter only operates accurately when in VIEW REDspace

* Limited GUI on HD Preview when both RED-EVF and RED-LCD are selected.

* EVF display with blank for approximately 3 seconds when in SYNC refresh mode:
o when exiting OPEN GATE mode
o after a change in Project Resolution

Operational restrictions specific to Build 18 BETA v3.6.4 firmware:

* For use with Rev B audio hardware (cameras shipped after Sept 15 2008, and cameras returned for Rev B audio hardware upgrade) Use with caution on Rev A audio cameras.

* User Keys and EVF Menus cannot control Ch1 / Ch2 Volume

* Microphone inputs will default to +10dB after channel is first enabled.


Operational restrictions of Build 18 series firmware:


* S4/i Lens Data Interface requires corresponding Lens Interface hardware.

* Camera firmware may not be able to read S4/i data from Cooke brand lenses.

* Look around area on HD-SDI and HDMI outputs is incorrect when in 4K ANA / 3K ANA / 2K ANA modes if camera is also feeding RED-EVF and RED-LCD outputs.

* Playback from RED-DRIVE may report ""audio codec error", although the recording is O.K.

* Non-speed verified CF cards are limited to 2K record resolution.

* Non Build 18 formatted media may report as “INCOMPATIBLE”- if so, reformat to clear.

* Image Magnify is not available during recording or playback at 3K and 4K resolutions.

* Entering and exiting Image Magnify causes a visual disturbance to monitor outputs.

* Time Code / Edge Code values displayed in monitor outputs do not update in real-time.

* 1080p HD-SDI outputs do not support PsF signal formatting option.
