It will be interesting to see how people buying or renting the RED ONE will store and then process their footage.

For those of you who have reserved a Red camera, could you enlighten others of your plans for dealing with the increased amount of data? What storage system are you planning on using? Also, please describe which resolutions/frame rates you will be shooting at and how you are going to process for color correction, onlining, and archiving.

When this info gets posted, I hope it will be of help to others who are considering or planning to use a RED ONE.

thanks,

Hi Casey,

I hope your new forum will grow as the RED starts to ship out...

I just wanted to bring up a conversation in regards to workflows...
Siince most of the editing applications are limited in resolution, frame-rate or both....I've been looking for something more....

We've already done some tests with NewTek's Speed Editor...with the clips that were on the RED's website....

Now for those who haven't heard about NewTek or Speed Edit..(SE).
NewTek was the originator of desktop video production back in the Amiga days...(I know shooking to those mac heads out there who thought that Apple started that;)...

SE is the fastest cuts up editor going...and it is resolution and framerate independent.

It would be nice to see RED & NewTek work together to support the RED RAW formats....and be able to work...even from a laptop...on location....or workstation...with all the bells and whisltes...SE scales depending on the system...so the better the system the more layers...in
REALTIME...not just a postage stamp preview...FULL SCREEN playback.

Well, looking forward to chatting with everyone here and looking at all of the possible workflows and pipelines to make various solutions.

Cheers,

Hi Casey,

With regards resolution and frame rates, the appeal for me of the Red is the ability to tailor these to the project. With all the variables including delivery format, capabilities of Post House, practicalities of storage in the field etc. To me, the proposed flexibility and options with the Red system make it very attractive.

Thanks, Ray. I appreciate the support.

Ahh yes, the Amiga! I grew up using that amazing machine... it was my entry into the world of Video Production. Back in the mid to late 80's I had the A500 and then A3000 models, and I actually worked for a production house that used the first Amiga based Video Toasters. Also, I worked at a Video / Computer Dealership in Hollywood for a while that carried the Newtek product line. Lots of memories... and yes, they truely were the ones to pioneer Desktop Video. I'm glad to see Newtek offering a res independant Editor...

You say you did tests with the Red footage released? How did that go? What were the results? And what file formats were you working with? I would think that the RedCine program could add Speed Edit support, as I'm sure a lot of other Editing software companies are thinking the same thing. I believe there will initially be Quicktime and Final Cut support since some key Red members came from AJA.

I agree, the flexibility is key to their success. When you begin projects with the Red, which formats are you planning on using? And what will your workflow be? I'm curious as to how people plan to deal with the large data files, format options, conversion, video monitoring, processing, storage, etc.

thanks,

Hello kalpana,

The basic workflow is as follows:

1) Choose your RED format to shoot in and on-board storage system (for Example: 4K REDCODE (compressed) RAW, using a 96GB Compact Flash Card media.

2) Transfer the Clips from the Compact Flash Card to your MAC G5. You can run them through the REDQUICK application (which will add a Quicktime wrapper around them) and immediately view 2K, 1K, or .5K proxy versions of the clips.

3) Import the RAW Clips into REDCINE to do a One Light Color Grade of the footage. You can go with any previous made LUTs - Look Up Tables (Color Profiles) - or create new Color Profiles.

4) Export the Clips from REDCINE in REDCODE format or other popular formats for use with various Editing Applications. For Final Cut, it is believed that there will be a new update that will support REDCODE and proxy modes. This is supposed to be in Final Cut Studio 2, so you may need to upgrade.

5) Edit your Clips and Export to Video formats or take the 4K or 2K files into another system for final Grading and Film out.

That is a very quick rundown of a possible workflow.

There are many factors that weigh in, so each project will bring it's own unique circumstances.

What type of productions are you interested in using the RED Camera on? And what formats would you require?

thanks again casey

I mosly make short films, cross genre. Documentaries, music videos, educational programmes, and lately wildlife..

I currently firewire all my footage (DVCAM) onto the G5 in the usual DV PAL resolution. I don't have a lossless card (or a card that can take analog) on my computer. So if i shoot on digibeta, beta or film, I edit on my computer and then go back for a final cut to a studio that offers digibeta format editing. I havent worked on HD and don't quite know if it will work on my system with optimal results. So, am wondering, if I were to upgrade my setup in a year, what should i look out for, keeping the red factor in mind.

thanks again

Well, A year is a long time in Computer terms. I would say that the MAC 8 cores will be better tested and more affordable by then, and 16 cores might be out by then. But to get an 8 core system, and Final Cut Studio 2 or perhaps a new version of Premiere (which is said to be in the works) would probably get you headed in the right direction. And memory prices will be coming down as usual too.

You will also need to consider what format you would like to be recording to on your RED as far as storage goes. These are going to be some truly interesting times. Smile
