(For a complete update, read the entire thread - especially last post).

-------------------------------------------------------------------

This was released this morning (10/24) from RED founder Jim Jannard:

We are on a Production Hold. But this time, we think you will appreciate it.

1. We are implementing a new daughter board to the sensor. The result is increased dynamic range and reduced noise (incredible as that may seem) over serial numbers 1-100 with no downside. This improvement affects all frame rates at or below 25fps. This is a major breakthrough for RED and I am sure will be of great benefit to all camera owners.

2. We have developed a new stainless steel PL mount system that is user adjustable, stable and does not use shims. It is as close to a religious experience as a lens mount gets.

3. We are taking time to enable more features and stabilize the firmware. We have a few more bugs than we like with each new build. The firmware should be finished about the same time we execute the new daughter board and PL mount.

We will retrofit all shipped cameras (1-100) with these changes at our expense then begin production again.

We have a production line fully operational that is stocked with parts ready to go as soon as we can implement these improvements. The cameras affected most are 101-200.

We made the decision today to hold production so we have the fewest amount of cameras to retrofit. I do not have a new confirmed schedule, but will post one as soon as we know exactly where we stand. It is most likely that 101-200 will begin shipping November 30th and 201-600 will begin shipping December 10th.

We believe we can make all these changes with this minor schedule impact even though the fire generated ash has contaminated our clean rooms and will take a week to fix. The fires still rage here and ash is everywhere.

We appreciate your patience. These changes and additions will greatly increase the capability and convenience of the RED ONE for all users. This is a perfect example of the RED ONE becoming a "next generation" camera for all our users without any additional cost.

Jim

Here is an update released on November 13th by RED's Jim Jannard:

"Shipping is scheduled to begin (after many hardware and firmware improvements) on Nov. 30th. We'll know by this Friday if we need more time or not. Improvements include a new lens mount system, less noise and higher data rate for improved dynamic range, new features and time to test. Several other minor improvements will also be made. We have also committed to bringing serial numbers 1-100 up to the new spec (at no charge to our customers). We also anticipate a few new formats, although they will likely follow in a firmware upgrade. We are doing our best to continue to improve the RED ONE. This effort won't stop as long as I am around..."

November 29th Update:

According to RED, the issue regarding possibly adding an additional daughter board for increased dynamic range and reduced noise has been solved without the need for the daughter board.

This is good news as it will most likely speed up the production schedule. We will post more details on this when they become available.

Also, the new stainless steel PL mount system that is user adjustable, stable, and does not use shims, is finished. Cameras 1-100 are most likely now being retrofitted (when owners have the time to send them in) and normal production should resume soon.

An official announcement on the resumed shipping schedule should be coming soon.

Why do we think shipping is about to resume?

This just released from RED's Jim Jannard (12/05/07):

"We have recently made significant improvements to many aspects of the RED ONE. That includes a new lens mount, better image quality by a new IR/low pass filter and moving it into a new location, better DSP, new sensor processing magic (instead of the new daughter board), a reworked mount system for the board stack, new(er) firmware, more features enabled... you get the idea. SO....

While we have been working tirelessly,

1- December deliveries will not hit the target quantities. We expect to ship serial about 200 cameras (don't call us, we'll call you). We will work continuously over the holidays to try to catch up. We hope to get back to a more reasonable delivery schedule after the 1st of the year.

2- We will replace all cameras serial #1-100 at N/C. *The replacements will be designated by an X (Serial #10X). Since many of these cameras are in service, this replacement process will be done during, or after, the month of January, at the discretion of the owner. You will ship your camera back to us (at our expense) and we will send the replacement upon receipt of your camera (at our expense). If your camera is in use and you want to wait for a better time to do the replacement, there is no time deadline to send it back. No complaints about the replacements being done in January (or later at your discretion) will be accepted.

3- EVFs are now in real production as are RED Drives. Delivery quantities will be slow at 1st for EVFs, RED Drives at good quantities. It also appears that we are in much better shape to deliver other RED accessories than in the past.

We appreciate everyone's patience. The decision to "think out loud" was a dangerous one. You hear the good, bad and the ugly as we go along. We hope that we can continue to operate this way. It is a refreshing (although challenging) way to communicate to our customers."

Jim posted this online recently about what is different in the upcoming new versions of the RED Camera.

(The first 100 shipped, and now significant improvements have been made both hardware and software from feedback given from users in the field as well as in-house testing. It was decided that Cameras would be replaced free of charge to the owners of the first 100 already shipped. Even though they functioned very well, Jim wanted the improvements made to be a part of everyone's Camera, and not just the newer models. They will be swapped out as customers schedules allow.)

Here is a list Jim released of the changes made in the newer design:

All of the footage you have seen so far is from "original cameras". So what is new and included in the new camera?

1. New lens mount. This is a big advancement in precision and ease of use.

2. New IR/LP filter moved to a new location... from 2mm to 8mm in front of the sensor. The flare characteristics and image quality improvements from this change are substantial.

3. Sensor settings and DSP improvements reduce noise and improve dynamic range.

4. Firmware improvements. The boot issue is gone. More features are enabled.

5. Cold weather improvements. We went from 0C operation to -20C by a change in the hardware.

6. Hot weather improvements. We have added fan settings that take us from near 40C to at least 40C. After that, you'll need to address the camera with alternative action. Fan, umbrella, cold packs, etc. depending on the temperature.

Issues left to discuss...

1. Sharpness. All other digital cameras have in camera sharpening. When we get compared side by side, this should be taken into careful consideration.

2. Data rate... we have the ability to increase the data rate if necessary. We are looking at that as another option.

We will always look at ways to increase performance and improve our camera. We are keenly motivated to get better everyday... at no cost to our customers.

Jim
