RED just announced the release of it's new color science, REDColor3 and REDGamma3, which yet again greatly improve image quality overall.
According to RED's Jim Jannard:
"Understand that this is fully re-written color science even though the results may seem subtle. Subtle but meaningful. REDcolor3 may look, at 1st blush, like REDcolor2 plus a bit of saturation... look more closely.
Graeme has done an incredible job with these... going the last mile is as difficult as going the 1st 100 miles.
We will release both a camera firmware and a REDCINE-X Pro upgrade. Open your old files with RC3 and RG3. You will be amazed.
My preferred workflow is now RG3/RC3 and Alchemy set to 0.350 (default) and post saturation set to 1.10 (optional). DI will typically still start with REDlogFilm and REDcolor3.
Shooting RAW (REDCODE RAW in this case) is the way to go. Getting locked down recording an RGB codec is very limiting. RC3 and RG3 is proof.
I love RED. Every time we improve our color science I can go back and look at old files in a new way. Pretty exciting.
Obsolescence obsolete... every which way you look at it."
So far, I am noticing some major improvements to skin tones and saturation. If the Alexa had any advantage over RED in a "straight from the camera" look, those days are over...
