In a surprising move, Arri has joined forces with James Cameron and Pace 3D systems with focus on the upcoming Arri Alexa-M Camera, which is a smaller version of the Alexa, however, has a seperate unit that is needed as a tethered recorder. It is almost as if ARRI was in a hurry, and simply chopped the Alexa into two pieces, rather than make a smaller camera.

What seems odd is that the Alexa-M is being touted as the smallest and best option for 3D, when it is clear the RED EPIC outperforms it in smaller size, higher resolution, higher framerates, better dynamic range, and has no need for a tethered recorder.

Final specs are yet to be announced, but it seems unlikely that the Alexa-M will rival RED's offering.

It is unknown why Cameron is choosing this route (perhaps ppolitical), however, many other top name Directors and DPs have already chosen EPIC for their blockbuster 3D movies, including upcoming projects such as The Hobbit, SpiderMan, Clash of the Titans II, Underworld IV, Jack the Giant Killer, and Ridley Scotts upcoming Alien prequels.
