Posted online recently by RED's Jim Jannard:
We are in the process of moving EPIC production from Stage 6 at RED Studios Hollywood to the permanent location in Irvine. There will be a bit of downtime during the move.
We have heard some competitors say that we have only shipped a few EPICs out to "my friends". While it is true that some early RED ONE customers, which also happen to have become my friends, have received EPIC-Ms... but the total number of EPIC-Ms out now is in excess of 250. I think that is half the population of Alexa's. The number shipped EPICs should surpass 500 before NAB.
We have EPIC-M production pretty well sorted out... although in small quantities.
EPIC-X production line is being set up and is still more of an unknown. There are so many moving parts here that it is impossible to give absolute production dates and quantities. Our customers wanted to know what was going on and we gave our best estimates given the knowledge we had and the history of how things actually work.
While I think we are getting much better at predicting... the complexity of this project is hard to verbalize. We are certainly doing our best, but there seems to be obstacles every day that surprise us. I am more comfortable getting all cameras ordered by NAB out by summer's end than I am how many EPIC-Xs will ship before NAB and when real numbers start rolling. We have hired the best trained professionals possible to head up production, but they walked into a situation with a ton of work to do and not much time.
Our goal is to satisfy our customers, not frustrate them. Delays are frustrating. The solution, in hindsight, would to have never put out estimates... even though everyone knows "things can change".
Having said that... some EPIC-Xs will ship before NAB."
