The 1.8" Solid State SSD Module is alive and kicking... Along with the 128GB 1.8" REDMAG, and 1.8" RED STATION reader.

1.8" REDSTATION Reader: $250
1.8" SSD Module: $1500
128GB 1.8" REDMAG (Media): $1500

* All modules are interchangeable between the Scarlet and EPIC.
* Ability to mirror output to two SSD modules for on-camera redundancy
* Ability to record and span two modules, so when one is full you begin recording on the other
* Ability to use a tether of some sort to record off Camera. (500 feet with the fiber module to module adapter)

* Possibility of recording different compression rates to different SSD modules. (ie: REDCODE 100 to one and REDCODE 42 to another)
* Possibly will it be able to duplicate one SSD to another on camera

Words from Jim:

"CF cards aren't big enough and fast enough to take advantage of the frame rates and low compression options on an EPIC. So we put together an SSD program that would cover most of the options. Pretty easy stuff.

Since many customers have CF cards that can work for some situations, we are working on an SSD module that can accept CF cards with an adapter... customer friendly.

There is no reason to offer 5K at 120 fps if you have to record REDCODE 5 (or a TON of compression) and get less than acceptable results. Thank heaven for REDCODE. Can you imagine recording uncompressed 5K?

People used to shoot REDCODE 28, which is about 10:1 compression. Then we moved to REDCODE 36, about 8:1 compression. Then to REDCODE 42 which is about 7.5:1. Each of these jumps chews up cards. Now we think the new "standard" will be 5:1. This is twice the data as the original RED ONE at any given resolution and frame rate. 5K is 60% more data than 4K. Then add in high frame rates and it is pretty easy to see that a CF card will choke, roll over and die. Good news is Moore's law.

Even with SSD's you can only record 5K @ 120fps with REDCODE 12:1. Good thing the sensor and system is so clean! It looks really great. But it showcases the need for faster media. We are working on a lot of things to help out. Did I mention that early in the RED ONE program 10:1 was all you could do? And Ché was shot in its entirety at 12:1?

EPIC is possible because of REDCODE. Without it we would be shooting to refrigerator drives or some dopey RGB codec.

Currently, with the SSDs you can shoot 5K @ 24fps at REDCODE 3:1... although I shoot 5:1. 5K @ 24fps HDRx™ is 6:1 (makes sense... twice 3:1).

We are likely to price the SSD module the same as the CF module, but you'll need to buy some media. You don't have to if you want to shoot 5K @ 24fps to CF cards. But that is about all the CF cards can do. Up the frame rate and you are looking for trouble.

Moore's law will kick in at some point I'm sure. We have priced them at what we think will happen, not what is now. That would be too expensive. The data rates in these SSDs is high. We have the exact same problem as with CF cards. Manufacturers specs don't match real performance so we had to pay a premium for guaranteed performance. Deanan has been pulling the remaining hairs out of his head working on this. It amazes all of us how loose the memory guys are with specs. Our customers don't need to worry about it... we do. But I can say that this is no easy trick. Deanan has the MB/sec. specs.

Just like we have with CF cards. The camera will analyze how fast the media is and let you know what you can get away with.

People want more resolution, less compression and higher data rates. Well folks, that equals more data. Good thing is that 500GB 3.5" drives are now 3TB drives and an 8GB or 16GB CF card is now a 64GB or 128GB or 256GB SSD. This is what we all signed up for. No turning back. :-)"
