[note: This thread is quite old now, as the Cameras have been shipping and in use on many productions since August of 2007.]

These images of the first RED ONE Camera prototype were just released to the public by Jim Jannard. They show the craftsmanship of the camera and also show that RED Digital Cinema has made their deadline of building a prototype by the end of Dec. 2006.

Happy New Year!

Looks pretty nice, and rugged as well. Is the housing powdercoated metal or a rubberized coating?

I believe a texturized paint was used over the silver colored metal that is shown in the first few images above.

From what we've learned, this is a prototype that was machined in the RED "garage" as it's been called. It was not built from production tooling and is meant to have basic functionality.

Wonder if they will have any kind of serious dustproofing/water resistance seals in it, or as an option (the REDed-X version) for all those extreme sports videographers sprouting like kudzu all over the place. Those guys love big format, digital, but they are hard on equipment.

Yes, great points... Extreme Sports in 4k would be sweet. Perhaps someone from Red will stop by and answer?

Smile

Here are newly released pictures of one of the early prototypes used for testing the sensor... not a full camera design. Nicknamed "Frankie", it is used in ongoing tests.

Here is an older picture of one of the early Red One physical prototypes... Thought I'd add it to the thread.

And one more photo of a fully decked-out Red One - playfully named the "Mack Daddy".

Check this out. This is one of the early prototype boards (possibly the first) called the "Breadbox" and only consisted of a 1/3" slice of the Mysterium sensor.

The logo on the sticker also is quite dated. Smile

Also, here are some of the early physical mockups that were shown in cases at the 2006 NAB show in Las Vegas.

RED Co-founder Ted Scholiwotz recently found this clip on a long lost tape.. the very first "outside" test shoot on the first wood box RED ONE prototype.

Classic Stuff...
