David Taylor is CineForm recently released this statement online:

"CineForm is pleased to officially announce support for Red One post workflows.

THE BASICS: CineForm has developed a command-line utility called R2CF.exe that will convert R3D files to CineForm files. Currently it is Windows (or Bootcamp) only, but will be made available for MacOS in the near future. Your CineForm files become your new master files for your online workflow and you can archive your R3D files as the digital negative source. R2CF allows you to choose either AVI or MOV wrappers depending on whether your intended post workflow is on Windows or Mac. Although R2CF does not yet work on Mac, the files it creates are fully Mac compatible. BTW, R2CF will be integrated into HD Link (with its GUI) in the near future, eliminating the requirement to use a command line.

CINEFORM ENCODER: To convert into CineForm files you need a CineForm encoder product installed (Neo HD/4K or Prospect HD/4K) in addition to R2CF.

CONVERT: R2CF will convert single R3D files to CineForm files. R2CF is included in the CineForm --> Tools directory under Start Menu for Neo HD/4K and Prospect HD/4K (Build 179 or later). In the Tools Directory we also have batch scripts (.vbs) that perform batch conversion on folders full of R3D files. Parameters within batch scripts are easily edited by right-clicking on the .vbs file (Windows Explorer) and selecting Edit.

EXPRESS FILES: With the introduction of R2CF we are also introducing a new workflow element called "CineForm Express" files. Express files are color-perfect "mini" versions of full-res CineForm files. An Express file is typically a 1/4 (horizontal and vertical) resolution version of the source file. For 4K (2:1) R3D source the Express file is 1024x512. It is about 3MB/sec in size. It also shares the same file GUID (Globally Unique Identifier, which we use for Active Metadata) with the full-res CineForm Master file, so it supports all NLE color correction, transitions, effects, and CineForm Active Metadata identically to the Cineform Master file. When used in a 1080p Premiere Pro project, Express files are properly scaled for HD-SDI output using an AJA Xena card.

The idea is that you can create CineForm Express files much faster than real time on a modern dual quad machine and then immediately begin real-time, multi-stream editing work identically to the way you would with a full-res CineForm Master file, including HD-SDI support. But the files are much smaller and have extremely high performance, lending easy RT editing even on a modest laptop.

Whenever it is convenient in your workflow you can unlink the Express files and re-link the full-res Master files to complete your online edit at your final mastering resolution while retaining effects, transitions, color correction, etc - no proxy files, EDLs, or conforming required.

R3D METADATA: All R3D metadata is copied and inserted into CineForm (both Express and Master) files. White Balance is formatted as Active Metadata. Timecode data is also retained. All CineForm file formats (Express / RAW / 444 / 422) support Active Metadata, although you'll need Prospect 4K (Windows) or Neo 4K (Mac - temporarily called the Mac codec) to manipulate Active Metadata.

Following is the workflow page for Red One:

The workflow page offers more details plus instructions about how to use the tools.

Feel free to give it a try. If you are not an existing CineForm customer you can download our Trial products that offer full functionality for 15 days."

Today, David Taylor of Cineform released this update to it's RED based workflow applications:

"CineForm Offers NEO 4K-Mac for Red Support (BETA)
CineForm is enthused to announce the BETA release of our native Mac converter for R3D files as part of Neo 4K-Mac, offering spatial resolution up to 4K.

Until now on Mac we've had our "CineForm Mac Codec". This BETA release is the first release of Neo 4K for Mac, and replaces the CineForm Mac Codec. Neo 4K-Mac includes: SetActiveMetadata for managing renderless color workflows, ReMaster which performs various file conversion and pre-processing operations, and our compression codec up to 12 bit precision and 4K spatial resolution. (For those who already have familiarity with CineForm products, on Windows "HD Link" holds the functionality of ReMaster. We'll be using the ReMaster name going forward.)

ReMaster: Used for file conversion and pre-processing. In this first BETA release, the ONLY format conversions offered by ReMaster are for Red files. ReMaster features for Red on Mac are similar to the script-based features we have on Windows, except we have a full GUI on Mac.

As it specifically relates to Red, ReMaster includes predefined presets for the following conversions:

- 1K CineForm Express files (color-perfect "Mini-Me" versions of CineForm Master files)
- HD 4:2:2
- HD 4:4:4
- 2K 4:4:4
- 4K 4:4:4 (4000-wide as default on Mac because of FCP limitations)
- 4K CineForm RAW (4000-wide as default on Mac because of FCP limitations)

You can create your own presets, or modify a predefined preset for your own purposes. You have basically two workflow options for Mac:

1) Use ReMaster to export to your preferred online finishing format (HD, 2K, 4K) then edit in FCP, using SetActiveMetadata to manage your renderless color workflow.

2) Create 1K Express files (<3MB/sec and fast to create) and do initial edits with Express files. They are very easy to edit even on a lower end laptops. Express files are color-perfect "Mini-Me" versions of full-res CineForm files, meaning you can color correct with them, add transitions, etc. In the background you can again use ReMaster to create your full-res CineForm Master files. When you're ready you can unlink the 1K Express Files from FCP and re-link with the full-res CineForm files. After re-linking, your project should remain intact including effects, but now at your online resolution. (CineForm Master files will have the same file name and same internal GUID as CineForm Express files).

SetActiveMetadata: SetActiveMetadata hasn't changed appreciably since earlier releases.

Rather than write an even longer missive here, I'll direct you to a couple locations for more information:

Download BETA Neo 4K: http://www.cineform.com/products/dow...TrialStart.htm

Tech Note - CineForm Workflow for Red One: http://www.cineform.com/products/Tec...neWorkflow.htm
Tech Note - ReMaster for R3D files: http://www.cineform.com/products/Tec...ersion-Mac.htm
Tech Note - SetActiveMetadata controls for Mac: http://www.cineform.com/products/Tec...tadata-Mac.htm

This is a Beta release so I suspect you might find a thing or three that we need to look further at. We appreciate any feedback.

SUGGESTED TESTS:
1a) Render some R3D files to Cineform Express files in ReMaster using the Express preset
1b) Double-click on one of the resulting Express files. Then also launch SetActiveMetadata. While the clip plays in QT Player, experiment with various Active Metadata parameters. Notice they work in RT and remain with the file, even when you move the file into FCP. Separately we can probably get David Newman to upload some generic 3D LUTs so you can see how these work. Otherwise you can create your own 3D LUTS using Speedgrade OnSet from Iridas. They have a 30-day Trial available.

2) Repeat the 1a and 1b tests at different resolutions and begin to experiment further with the flexibility of Active Metadata.

NOTE: We do not yet have a product page posted for Neo 4K-Mac on our website. We're going to hold off until we have added some additional features to ReMaster and have its companion product Neo HD-Mac ready for Beta. So the Tech Notes pages pointed to above are the best place for information for now."
