NAB 2008 Wrap Up

OK - So, it's mid-June rather than mid-April, and I'm posting about NAB. Well, it's been one of those years, where everything is happening at once.

Film work has kept me very busy with G.I. Joe, and my partner Chris and I have also been shooting quite a bit - some spec commercials and a Music Video for an L.A. based band, so getting up to Vegas this year was an accomplishment in and of itself.

It was WELL worth it, however, as RED was yet again the hit of the show with SEVERAL anticipated new product announcements, as well as quite a few surprises:

SCARLET 3K Camera

After much speculation, SCARLET, RED's "Pocket Professional" Camera was unveiled. Features include up to 3K Resolution, a 2/3rds inch updated Mysterium X Sensor, 1-120 FPS (180 FPS Burst Mode), up to 100MB/Sec REDCODE RAW and RGB Recording to DUAL Compact Flash Cards (which RED has recently also announced 16GB versions). Also built in is a 4.8" flip-out LCD Monitor, 8X RED Zoom Lens (T2.8), Full Auto or Full Manual Shooting Modes, HDMI, HD-SDI, Firewire 800, and USB2 ports, as well as a Still Mode and Wi-Fi Control.

The design is a bit larger than what I first was anticipating as a "pocket" camera, but I'm certainly not complaining. The prototypes shown sported a small RED MatteBox with 2 stages, and several other RED ONE accessories attached, as they we were told "90% of RED Accessories will be compatible".

Here's the best part. The price? Under $3000 US. 3K for $3K. Wow.
RED expects SCARLET to be shipping by Early 2009, but will not be taking reservations as was done with the RED ONE.

EPIC 5K Camera

That's right, 5K. This was one of the huge surprises that even many in the inner RED circles were not aware of. RED has outdone themselves again and announced the new EPIC Camera which will be based on a Full Frame S35mm New Mysterium X Sensor. The body is notably smaller and lighter (6 pounds), is fully machined aluminum, and has a Hybrid Stainless PL Mount.

At 5K, EPIC will be capable of 1-100 FPS, and up to 100MB/Sec REDCODE RAW and RGB Recording to REDFLASH. The I/O connections have been changed from the RED ONE design to accommodate Full Size Dual Link HD-SDI (BNC), and (2) Full Size XLR Inputs, and HDMI, Firewire 800, and USB2 ports. The BNC and XLR connections are a welcome change to many who felt the RED ONE's mini connectors were too delicate for many shooting environments. As as result, several 3rd partys developed breakout boxes to attach to the Camera to alleviate the issue.

Other noticeable differences are the body shape. EPIC has a shorter, box shape, with a built in Cheese Plate on the top side, however, the side User and Record buttons have been replaced by a larger set of rear controls. This makes it easier to navigate through menus instead of using the small joystick. Also mentioned are Wi-Fi control ability, compatibility with most RED ONE accessories, and a Fully Upgradeable Sensor, Body, Boards, and Mount.

Since 5K is not a traditional workflow resolution, RED has said that the files would be output to 4K using their REDCINE and RED Alert! software, with the downrezzed results being higher quality images. The new sensor design is also supposed to allow for better Dynamic Range, Latitude, and lower Noise Levels. With the added ability to have better compressions ratios, an even cleaner image is expected. The RED ONE is already well respected for it's image quality.

EPIC is also expected to be available in early 2009, with a price tag of $40,000 US. The shocker here is that RED will be offering anyone who owns a RED ONE full sticker value of their Camera body ($17,500 US) if they would like to trade in and upgrade to the Epic. This is unheard of in the industry.

RED RAY

Another big surprise was the announcement of RED RAY, a consumer/prosumer Playback device based on both Optical Disc and Solid State media formats. The Drive which is roughly the size and shape of a Mac Mini, has Quad HD-SDI (BNC) outputs, HDMI, USB2, and E-SATA connections in addition to the CF Card reader, Optical Disc and RED Express slot.

The Optical Disc is stated to be able to playback from RED's proprietary RED DISC format at 4K, 2K, 1080p, 720p, and SD as well as playback native RAW .R3D files from Compact Flash (straight from RED Cameras).

Uses for the device range from consumer playback of finished products to on-set video assist and dailies. A Pro version is being talked about for more involved on-set uses.

RED RAY is priced at $900 US and is planned to ship in early 2009.

RED MATTE BOX

RED also showed off a small MatteBox which was attached to the SCARLET 3K Camera. Is had 2 stages for filters/polas and worked with the fixed Scarlet lens. RED has canceled plans on a full size MatteBox for the RED ONE and EPIC Cameras due to other third partys already saturating the market with quality products.

RED 7" LCD

Yet another pleasant surprise was the larger version of the RED LCD monitor. At 7" (compared to the 5.6" offering) and made of a metal frame, the new LCD also boasts a faster response time (30ms vs. 50 ms), a better contrast ratio (400:1 compared to 250:1), improved brightness (1000 nits vs. 550 nits), better viewing angle (130 degrees H, 110 degrees V vs. 60 degrees H, 50 degrees V), and less power consumption (2.8W vs. 4.6W). The 5.6" LCD has been upgraded to a metal frame, however.

The new 7" LCD is priced at $2500 US.

RED PRIME LENS SET

The much anticipated RED Prime Lens Set was also shown which consists of a 25MM T1.9, 35MM T1.9, 50MM T1.9, 85MM T1.9, 100MM T1.9, and a 300MM T2.9. Also announced as "coming in the second wave" are the 15MM T2.8 and 18MM T1.9.

RED 18-85mm T2.9 LENS

Also shown was the new 18-85MM T2.9 Zoom.
Price TBD.

RED 300mm LENS

And a new Pro model of the 300mm was shown which seems to have been rehoused with better optics.

Native .R3D File Support in Apple Color

Onto the software side of things, RED showed a working beta version of native .R3D file support in Apple's Color, which will be a nice addition to the current selection of grading tools that support RED. (REDCINE, RED Alert!, and Scratch). The soon to be released plugin apparently works with Final Cut EDLs and can import native .R3d files and then output up to 2K.

More info should be available soon.

Final Cut Pro Log and Transfer Plugin

Also shown was the FCP Log and Transfer Plugin, which makes importing RED Clips much easier and works in a very similar manner as the Log and Transfer plugin for Panasonic's P2 format.

This plugin is available now on RED's support site:

Summary

NAB 2008 definitely did not disappoint. There were many new products at RED, and of course there was the RED User event, which was a blast. It was great meeting so many of you from all over the world and forming a new community.

Special thanks also go to Ben at RED Lighting Software for the raffle item that I ended up winning (DV Monitor Pro). I hope to do a review of the software before too much time passes by. Also, always great seeing friends from around the world (Chris H., Norm C., Eric P., Art S., Karl S., Steve G., Ketch, R., and of course the great folks at RED - Ted, Jarred, Ivan, Kelly, Kevin, Stuart, Rob, AND OF COURSE, JIM! (It was such an honor to meet you and discuss all things RED with you!)

Attached below are some photos from this trip (my 10th NAB) and many photos from the RED booth, event, etc.
