The LAFCPUG event, which was held at The Gallery Theater at Barnsdall Art Park in Hollywood, was very successful with quite a large crowd filling the entire theater.

There were demos of various plug-ins for Final Cut and some nice raffle give-aways.

But the highlight was, of course, the RED camera. Ted Schilowitz, of RED DIGITAL CINEMA, was on hand to give a short overview and answer questions, but the main presentation was done by Curtis Harris (of ProMax Systems) who talked mostly about workflow challenges and the importance of redundant backup and archival in a tapeless environment.

Next was Nick Jushchyshynm, from Digital Domain and Pixel Corps, who showed RED footage as it relates to Visual Effects. He demoed beautiful keying of 4K RED footage within a plug-in for Shake with some very difficult-to-key types of situations, and the REDCODE codec performed exceedingly well.

Then Blair Paulson and Evin Grant, of the new production group the Red Ninjas, spoke about their experience on various productions they have worked on with the RED Camera, including a commercial, a music video, and video for digital signage in Las Vegas. They also showed quite a bit of footage and then brought a Camera on stage, shot some 4K footage, and brought the Compact Flash Card over to a Mac Book Pro, off-loaded the footage, and brought it right into REDCINE and Final Cut Pro. The footage all looked very good, but unfortunately, only a lower res 1K projector was available. Other Red Ninjas, Tonaci Tran and Brook Willard, were also on hand demonstrating the Camera and answering questions for the crowd both during and after their main presentation.

There were not too many major announcements from RED that we haven't already posted here, but it does seem as if the floodgates are about to open with perhaps 500-600 new cameras hitting the streets by late December or early January.

The event definitely went well and the crowd was very excited about all things RED... with several rounds of applause erupting throughout the night.

Some pictures below - sorry for the low light / poor quality, but you get the idea.
