More from RED's Jim Jannard:

"Let me see if I can clarify this... "Magic Motion" is revolutionary. Those are not our words but the words of everyone who has seen it.

Magic Motion is the result of HDRx™. More dynamic range and an incredible new way of seeing motion, that has been described as "more like you really see", or "unbelievable" or "incredible". This is something you really need to pay attention to... according to everyone who has seen it.

We believed that REDCODE was an incredible breakthrough at RED. The ability to record 4K to a CF card seemed impossible. But Ché, Knowing, The Informant, District 9, Social Network and a ton of other features proved that REDCODE was a real "event" in camera technology.

Now comes HDRx™. Remember this post and date. HDRx™ is just as important, if not more, than REDCODE. We have tested it in the most demanding situations. It qualifies as one of the single most important breakthroughs of RED."

More from Jim Jannard on HDRx™ Magic Motion:

"HDRx™, Flat, Ungraded, +3, and compressed Smile

As compared to "normal" motion, there is more "reference" sharpness (or temporal resolution). This is +3 which is the most "normal". At +6 you get much more of the temporal resolution and sharpness of the moving object.

If you can't tell a difference (trust me that you can in a direct comparison) you get 3 stops more DR. That is a good thing.

The amount of added dynamic range (and "Magic Motion") is numbered by stops... +3, +4, +5 & +6.

You select. The higher the number, the sharper the "other" stream is...

I am set on +3. But I can see times when I would select higher."

More from Jim Jannard:

"With HDRx™, "Magic Motion" is variable."

(Same Frame... processed with 3 different settings after acquisition.)

Jim Jannard:

"Graeme has developed some new and wonderful HDRx™ tools. A great "Default" option and some serious sliders. You can dial in how much highlight protection you want and need which also means you can dial in how much MM you need.

HDRx™™™™ can be used for motion tracking ("x" frame) and also pulling keys. Simon Robinson was here for VFX night at RED and had a prototype of the HDRME (motion estimation) plugin. His comment was that motion estimation would work better with HDRx™ because of the extra information provided by the program.

We had Ian from LightIron grade the barn sequence... lots of information in the clip to give an assortment of options. Incredible grade in a short period of time.

Lots of good news."

Also:

"HDRx™ and EasyHDR™ are in development. There is no way we are going to post early files other than the 3MB "Export for web" files we have just shared. It isn't fair to Graeme or the rest of us to get picked apart when we still have so much to do. These are early prototype executions you are seeing. Just like our color science... it will get better as we have time to work on it.

Don't ask for high res streams, R3Ds or anything else. You are not likely to see them until we are ready. In the meantime, we will post snippets along the way.

EPIC will ship with HDRx™.
" :-)

Jim Jannard:

"Everyone who has seen it is surprised at what it does and surprisingly what it doesn't do, based on their preconceived notions. I suspect that will continue to be the case.

Don't forget that there are many layers of options here. You can, depending on your skill or budget, use masks and do some pretty involved stuff with the "x" track, including motion and grading. You can adjust the amount of the "x" track you use in REDCINE-X. You will even have some limited control options in camera with eHDR™. It involves knowledge (not speculation) of what each does. That knowledge is what separates a "pro" from a "prosumer". Testing will be necessary, and I have found out... quite interesting and fun. Pushing along in new territory is something that keeps us moving forward and not getting stale.

One thing I agree with is that nothing is perfect. But eHDR™ and HDRx™ sure solve a lot of problems and give a ton of creative choices and capabilities that we have never seen before. I like it."

Update from Jim Jannard on eHDR mode:

"EasyHDR™ on hold...
For now, we are going to put eHDR™ on hold. As a reminder, eHDR™™ is the one that does all the processing for you in camera. You select a number (that represents stops of highlight protection) and the camera does the rest.

The more we have used eHDR™, the more we can see why having full control over the combining process makes more sense... which is what you have with HDRx™.

HDRx™™ uses two tracks, one "normal" exposure and one "under" for the highlight protection. This gives you several options.

1. Combine the two frames with the ability to use a slider to control how much of each you choose to use. This results in "Magic Motion".

2. Combine the two frames with help from The Foundry. Same flexibility but the results are "MNMB" (more normal motion blur). There are a few instances when this is the better solution... like dancing flames of a fire.

3. Reference the "under" for motion tracking... then combine (or ignore).

The overall flexibility of HDRx™ is just too seductive to ignore. It is like shooting RAW was a JPEG. One is infinitely flexible and one is "baked in". One is "pro" and one is not.

For now, we are going with infinitely flexible. That may change down the road... as with all things RED.

Parting shot... EPIC doesn't need an HDR for most situations. The DR and new color science makes this camera an incredible tool just as it is. But it is nice to know that HDRx™ is there when you reach for it."
