If the 4K modes in RedCode can not give 60fps, then what about a 3k mode that gives higher framerates, or a windowed 2.35:1 mode that allowed for less data, and higher framerates?

Can anyone from Red answer these possibilities?

thanks,

interesting idea there. i would like to know if that is possible also. i should think it would work if supported in the camera software?

I spoke to Ted Shilowitz about this at NAB and he couldn't see why this would not be possible. I think it is just a software/firmware modification that could be an easy feature addition. Other custom modes would most likely then be possible...

absolutely an idea, but I doubt 3k is a working pattern, as this requires an advanced scaling, and this seems whats still missing. Red sticks to simpler patterns like 2:1 as on the HD-SDI outputs. If we get an exact half 4.5k (still a fat resolution and more than many highspeed digital cameras I think) it would be cool.
But I also thought about the possibility of another readout of the CMOS, not a real scaling. Readout of the full area, just not every pixel.
Would give full DOF, 35mm sensor size and might allow higher frame rates too. But just in case my understanding of image sensors is right and this idea goes way deeper into the techniques of chip-technique than I know.

Hi augenmensch - Welcome.

When you say scaling, are you referring to off the sensor? As far as I know, you would just use a larger area on the sensor as in a 3K windowed mode... this allowing the RedCode to handle less data than 4K and up the potential FPS as in the way windowed 2K works.

thoughts anyone?

(by the way, augenmensch, are you a reservation holder?)

Thanks Very Happy and yes #850
Windowing is what I try to avoid, if technically possible. As you know reproduction scale would change.. I find that annoying.
However, the higher frame rates are about lower data rates (off the sensor) and compression speed. The compressor is at its maximum speed according to [other sources]-), hence faster recording media doesnt cut the mustard.
Its the raw number of pixels that must be lowered.
(Still) Wonder if you could read out the sensor in odd manner (e.g. 2,1,2,1, would come to 3k), instead of windowing.
Scaling, whether off sensor or somewhere else (Unfortunately I don't really understand your answer at that point, sorry) doesn't work, the engine/CPU is not fast enough.

Yes, the higher Frame Rates are what I am mainly concerned with, as currently, the 4K seems limited. Hmm... tell me more about this idea of the "odd manner"... Are you referring to a type of pull down? If so, I have a feeling Red would frown upon that, but it could be nice to have as an option.

As far as the Scaling goes, I don't think that is what is happening when we are referring to windowed mode. I believe it is more like cropping and the addition area outside the window is not processed, allowing smaller data rates / transfer speed.

If so, then a "3K" mode might offer an in between mode and get us near 80+ FPS rather than 60fps.

Btw, what is the Red "buzz" like in Zurich? Smile

Update:

For those of you who don't already know, RED added 3K modes (up to 60fps) in build 14! (We are now on build 15 which also added Anamorphic Modes)

We're extremely happy RED is listening, and continues to improve an already incredible Camera.

To further this discussion, it would be great to see RED push the limits even more by getting the 3K framerate up to 75.

By simple math, it would seem possible that if 4K is maxed out at 30fps, and 2K goes up to 120fps, then 3K should in theory be able to get up to 75fps instead of 60fps.

Perhaps in a build in the not too distant future, we will have this feature enabled.

Yet another update. RED has added another recording mode called 4K HD which will allow for a 16:9 aspect ratio frame that is exactly twice that of 1080p HD (1920 x 1080 pixels).

The mode will record in 3840 x 2160 pixels at 1 - 30 fps.

This allows for easier workflows for productions that are finishing only in HD, such as episodic television shows.

Also, RED has mentioned that in a future build, they are looking into adding a 4.5K mode to give users even more resolution to maximize the capability of the sensor. More on that when we hear about it.
