RED Day was a fun event. It was great to hang at the new pad, formerly known as Ren-Mar (and Desilu) Studios (!) - now RED Studios Hollywood. Funny, not long ago I worked on a feature in one of those very stages.

To start, there was a huge line outside, then once inside, refreshments were served and people mingled to a casual music vibe in the background. Work stations were scattered about and a small set was lit by candle light to show just how well an M-X upgraded RED ONE performed. Throughout the day, clips were shot and then brought over to various workstations. There were demo areas from Assimilate, Hollywood DI, Apple Color, and others, as well as the main theater which boasted a 40' screen with an amazing new Sony 4K Projector displaying images from a Pablo 4K..

Also there was an area specifically setup "trade show style" which had all the bottom lit glass cases - housing RED ONE and DSMC Cameras, accessories, and lenses.

Jim started off the day by talking about resolution, and the new M-X sensor, then showed some new footage. He then gave the stage to Michael Cioni of Light Iron who spoke about changes to the program as well as demonstrated new features in REDCINE-X and in the new Camera build.

After a break, where people were allowed hands on time, there was a
casual Q&A session which resulted in a nice conversation.

It was nice to see some familiar faces and get to spend more time with the folks at RED. (Jim and Jarred - nice speaking with you - I appreciate you taking the time). Smile

Here are some things I made note of... hopefully they are accurate.
Please free to add more to this post if you were there or to upload more photos:

- Trimming of .R3Ds coming in the not too distant future.
- New "RED M.D." metadata format (.RMD) that allows you to set a look in REDCINE-X, and export it. This file not only contains the color information such as the old .RSX file, but other MetaData information, such as script notes, lens and Camera info, etc.
- Ability to Save Looks and upload to Camera via REDCINE-X Demoed.
- REDCINE-X "module" support from "major players" coming soon.
- REDCINE-X EDL support coming soon.
- REDCINE-X Timecode output coming soon.
- REDCINE-X Timecode Audio Sync coming soon.
- New Metering modes coming soon which measure from RAW instead of RGB.
- New False Color mode that shows only clipping hilights (Red) or Crushed Blacks (Purple) measured from RAW.

- Mysterium-X Low Light Reel shown via RED RAY (soon to be renamed) 15 mb/s. Had new music track, some additional shots.
- Reels were shown on new SONY SRX-T420 (on Rental) and RED stated that they were waiting for the one they purchased to arrive soon. Also noted was how this new projector had even amazed the folks at RED at just how much better 4K could still look compared to HD. The Reels shown were just astounding on the large screen they had set up.
- RED RAY (soon to be renamed) was talked about in more than one way. Examples of it's usage (as an ASIC) were spoken of such as use on a PCI-e card, Set Top Box, Built into TVs, as well as the original designs shown so far. I think RED is thinking on a huge scale for this puppy.

- RED Studios Hollywood will continue to rent out Sound Stages, but use 1 for ongoing tests, demos, REDucation, events, etc. and another for Camera Maintenance, Support.
- DSMC Still Camera mode will have most features expected of similar DSLR Cameras.
- Resolution Charts were shown comparing RED Mysterium to Sony F35 and Canon 5D. The F35 measured around 1.7K. The theory put forth was that this was roughly 88% of 1080p, which has been "acceptable". RED ONE's Mysterium sensor (Bayer Pattern) is roughly 3.5K, which is around 85% of 4K. (1700/1920 = 88.5%, 3500/4096 is 85.5%). But the decision for RED to go to 5K (Bayer) would mean that translated to 4K true measured resolution, which they believe will be the new standard to come, both in DI and in theatrical and home viewing.
- "ASA" of Mysterium-X said to be around 800 ASA... but depending on the shooting environment, might have even better results at different settings.
- Mysterium-X said to have "at least 2 more stops" of signal to noise ratio (Dynamic Range).
- Moving forward, REDCINE-X will be the only developed application and will only offer Full-DeBayer output. (Other DeBayer options will be available for viewing).

- The "Tattoo" EPIC-X beta program was initially going to be around 100 Cameras, but because of production costs, will be more likely around 20.
- "Stage 2" of the EPIC-X upgrade program is expected to kick in approximately 2 months after Tattoo beta testing.
- EPIC and Scarlet will hopefully be coming out this summer. Jim stated he would be quite upset if that were not the case.
- Support for the Euphonix MC Color coming soon along with support for other grading control surfaces. (Demonstrated)
- Support for the latest Color Science coming soon to Apple Color.
- RedColor and RedGamma were demonstrated (compared to the older REDSpace)to demonstrate a huge difference in keeping onset and post looks consistence throughout the entire process. This will be huge for DI work and the overall workflow.

- RED MatteBox design change. Will now have swing away option.
- Talk of support of Multiple RED Rockets in the future.
- Read/Reset time for the Mysterium-X sensor has been greatly improved. The original "Boris and Natasha" alpha prototypes had a 30ms read/reset time when Peter Jackson made Crossing the Line. Read/reset time is now 8.7-8.9 on Mysterium. Mysterium-X has a 5ms read/reset time. Film is comparable to 4ms.
- The ASICs being designed for the new Cameras 29 (!) layers. (Supposedly twice as many layers as the next most complicated ASICs ever made.)
- RED had committed to a 3D program.
