1. What is the deal with Red taking so long to release the Scarlet?

2. What are we saying for cost plus matte box & LCD Moniter etc.

3. Will it cost more than £5000

4 Will the Scarlet supercede the 1/2" Censor on the Sony PMW EX-3?

I am really thinking about getting a Sony if Red doesn't put the boot into manufacturing, am I mad?

Any help would be throughly appreciated.

Chris.

The design of Scarlet has gone through major revisions since it was first announced. Way back when, it started out as an idea of a "Pocket Camera" that most people thought was going to be 2K. Then RED announced it's plans for the larger size along with several other models including EPIC 5K. Scarlet was then bumped up to 3K res. There was quite a bit of feedback from professionals in the industry about both designs for Scarlet and EPIC. RED then decided to change the initial design and invent the DSMC (Digital Still and Motion Camera) Modular system instead, which all of RED's future Camera designs are being based upon.

Several versions of each Camera body which include the Camera Sensor and Electronics (called brains) for both Scarlet and EPIC were announced in November of 2008 with slight revisions later shown in December. Here is a link to that press release:

RED recently announced specs, shipping order, and pricing of it's EPIC line (EPIC-X will come first) as well as modules and accessories for the DSMC system, which can be found here:

The final specs for Scarlet have yet to be announced, but are expected at the end of November 2009. We will post the news as it becomes available.

Keep in mind that there are to be 4 versions of Scarlet available, and most should be able to have their Sensor upgraded as RED improves it's Sensor program. Currently, the announced Scarlet models are:

2/3" Sensor - 3K Res (8x Fixed Zoom Lens) 1-120fps (150fps burst)
2/3" Sensor - 3K Res (Interchangeable lenses / mounts) 1-120fps (150 burst)
S35 Sensor - 5K Res (Interchangeable lenses / mounts) 1-30 fps (72fps burst)
FF35 Sensor - 6K Res (Interchangeable lenses / mounts) 1-30fps (72fps burst)

Scarlet should technically perform much better than the Sony PMW EX-3 for several reasons. Here are just a few that immediately come to mind:

1) REDCODE RAW vs. MPEG RGB
2) Sony EX-3 limited to 1920 x 1080/59.94i/29.97P/23.98P (vs Scarlet's 3K, 5K or 6K models)
3) Scarlet should have superior optics (based upon RED shipping lenses), but Scarlet also is made to accept PL Mount 35mm and 16mm glass as well has interchangeable lens mount for compatibility with many other lenses.
4) Mysterium-X Sensor DR is impressive based on test images released so far.
5) Modular Design keeps Camera system from becoming obsolete anytime soon.
6) Scarlet's EVF option is top of the line.
7) Cost for performance ratio hard to beat with Scarlet 3K fixed lens when it becomes available.

You are not mad if you have projects you need to work on. Definitely don't put things on hold to wait for a Camera (or any other gear for that matter) to ship. As much as many people wish the DSMCs were out today, the smart thing is to make the best decision you can today. If that means buying an EX-3, and then selling it in a few months (or renting it out), then that maybe the best way to go for your particular situation.

I'm personally saving for the S35 Scarlet and renting other Cameras as I need them in the mean time.

Cheers,
