RED has recently been working on improving it's "Color Science" for getting even better quality images (especially in Tungsten and Low light situations).

Jim Jannard posted this online discussing the advantages behind shooting RAW and what these changes mean going forward:

"Graeme has just completed a new version of RED Color Science and we are looking for a few test pilots to try it out.

The improvements are meaningful and improve image color throughout the spectrum but specifically address shooting under tungsten light..."

----------------------------

"So with all the new cameras coming out as motion capture alternatives, why is it so important to shoot RAW instead of MJPEG, AVCHD or H.264?

1. RAW files are much more flexible in adjusting exposure and color grading.

2. RAW color science is not "baked in". For example, the new color science being tested now (see thread on RED ONE General) can be used to go back and make old footage better! And if we improve color science again, it will always be useful for all footage shot... not just new footage. Compression standards like AVCHD or H.264 are likely to change going forward. RAW is forever.

RAW is like a digital negative. It gives you a ton more flexibility now and in the future."

Here are some examples posted by RED Camera owners and users around the world who have been testing the soon to be released new RED color space.

The comparisons are done using the new beta 3.72b version of RED Alert! software compared to the previous 3.60 version:

Casey,

Just to be sure I understand, the only thing done in your screen shots was one was the older RED Alert and one was the newer?

Was the same curve given to both?

Also what about RED Alert v20?

Hey Von!

Yes, these samples of RED footage were taken from various RES Users around the world. Each one shows the differences between the new beta 20.1.6 version of RED Alert! software compared to the previous 3.60 version.

As far as I know, the curves were the same in each example. (You can see this in some of the examples which show the RED Alert! interface).
