Jim Jannard commented online today about the upcoming release of the updated REDCINE application called REDCINE-X:

"I think we are close enough to announce this one. We are working on a new REDCINE-X™and should have some screen shots later this week (or so). We are interested in feedback before we launch it in August.

R-X™ will support Build 20, RED Rocket and be Mac and PC compatible. We also think it will be more solid and user friendly... should be or we are wasting our time.

1st version will have the basics, then we will add features over time.

Please do NOT ask us to make this an app that replaces every application you know of or have dreamed about. That's what you pay the other guys a lot of money to do."

The original REDCINE was developed in part by ASSIMILATE, the makers of SCRATCH and SCRATCH CINE. This new version of REDCINE-X is now completely made by RED.

Some features added include a new GUI, scrubbing clip thumbnails, output to RAW format, and support for a plugin architecture - which should open up the possibilities for anything that is lacking.

It also will support still file formats (with the upcoming DSMC Cameras - Scarlet & EPIC - in mind). Adobe is also supposed to support the RED still format (Photoshop / After Effects, etc.).
It will be released to the public sometime in August.

Casey, with no EDL support how are you planning to utilize this? Do you currently use RedCine in your workflows, or deliveries for clients?

Hi CJ,

Good to hear from you again. While I agree that EDL support would be a great addition to REDCINE-X, there still will be many uses for it as is (just like REDCINE).

I use REDCINE on set to generate looks with TIFFs, and occasionally render low-res clips. It also can be used as a way to monitor clips in a high quality environment, since you can send the output to a calibrated monitor. Often, I am using REDCINE to check exposure, focus, and the DP keep an eye on how things are turning out. With the addition of RED ROCKET support, this is going to make an excellent on-set Video Assist system.

As an IATSE Local 695 Engineer, I am looking forward to having real-time playback of scaled 4K footage immediately available after downloading. In addition, I have done timecode burns for dailies on simple projects, but have switched to REDRushes and ClipFinder for this lately.

Also, there are many tools available right now, such as Crimson that offer conforming methods with REDCINE. I only imagine that what Ian Bloom is working on next is going to be even better. Monkey Extract is another affordable solution for .R3D conforming.

For a free application, REDCINE-X is going to be greatly appreciated.

But the key here is what RED announced about REDCINE-X having support for a plugin architecture. They have stated that they are most likely going to be going with "OpenFX", an open standard for visual effects plug-ins.

http://openfx.sourceforge.net/

They have also stated that "there will be lots of hooks" into the app, and that even though they will not being adding Conform / EDL support themselves, they WILL be making it "easy enough for someone else to add it".

So I imagine that this may turn into the best of both worlds whereas RED can focus on what they do best while allowing others to producr plugins in the areas that they specialize in, whether that be image processing plugins or EDL import / export support.

Exciting times... we shall see how it all develops.

Jim Jannard commented further on REDCINE-X today:

"R-X is a detour from Assimilate Scratch. There is no question that REDCINE was a modest derivative of Scratch minus a lot of features. Building R-X from scratch (and not from Scratch) gives us a lot more options to control what we can deliver to our customers for free. While we think Scratch is a terrific tool for RED users (and we recommend it), we also believe that our customers want more stability and updates for REDCINE along with more features as we move forward. R-X is the 1st step towards that end.

R-X will always be free. It will be difficult to give (and support) many features that come from true professional applications. That said, we think we can leverage this new foundation to a place that will satisfy more people than the road we were on before. We fully expect R-X to be a platform that can be very useful to many of our customers."
