So with red being stuck to there ineffective Assimilate and Apple contracts what options are out there for us? Preferably something that actually works.

[edit: moderator note: Please read the entire post here, since important developments have recently opened up the RED file format to many third party post solutions. RED released it's REDCODE SDK and several impressive names have already announced support in their product lines, such as ADOBE, AVID, QUANTEL, CINEFORM, IRIDAS, DIGITAL VISION, and CHROME IMAGING, in addition to APPLE and ASSIMILATE. See the Third Party section for more on these exciting developments]

Welcome.

Nice first post. Smile

Can you explain more about your apparent frustrations? Also, what is your current RED workflow and what issues are you having.

I am aware of a few third party tools in the works that may help you depending on your needs.

thanks for stopping in... feel free to tell us more about your background and RED experiences.

Post workflows are essential...we need to see the R3D file open in all platforms sooner rather than later.

I have heard mention of some solutions being programed by users and that it is not terribly difficult. Has anyone used any of these programs?

a solution that doesnt require rendering dpx files would be great, what are you refering to?

I haven't gone down the RedTrip route yet, as I believe something better in in the works from Ian Bloom and some others. Not sure as to what that is though.

It'd be nice just to get batch rendering out of RedAlert in the meantime.

Yes, I believe the next offering from Ian is going to be called Crimson.

His previous tool, "REDTrip" is a Final Cut Pro and REDCINE Conforming Workflow based upon a python script utility. It allows conversion from FCP XML to REDCINE XML and supports all frame rates as well as alternative file names via substitution.

Also included is FCP Roundtrip, which passes through files which are not matched to R3D.

Crimson is supposed to be 1000 times better. Perhaps Ian will stop in and tell us about it.

What are your current workflows right now? REDINE, RED ALERT! ? DPX, QT, etc?

I've heard whispers of some underground workflow called ASPEN or ALPINE or something like that. i was thinking its Cineform based but maybe not?

Crimson sounds nice. but Crimson relies on redcine and i worry that if Red or Assimilate don't like Crimson, they could shut it down pretty easily.

By the way, my understanding is that RED is definitely planning on opening up REDCODE for other companies once they finish it.

Currently, they say they will be offering an SDK once their initial agreements expire and the Codec is finished. I can see their point in that it is quite difficult to support many other companies when the target is always moving especially when they are already quite taxed in finishing the product.

It would, of course, be great to have AVID, Premiere, and other workflow support now, but hopefully this will not be too far off.

I still am interested in hearing about your current workflows and RED projects.

Why no response, Bad Mojo? We're interested in hearing more about your current workflow and issues you are dealing with.

By the way, since you all started posting on this topic at the same time, it's pretty suspicious.

Probably the same person, no?

I thought it would be appropriate to bump this topic, since RED has officially announced they are going to be releasing the .R3D SDK in the coming days.

Already RED has shown screenshots of the UI from Adobe CS3. ( shown here http://www.redcamcentral.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=492 )

Anyone interested in signing up for the SDK can register here:
